Best Luggage: How to Choose the Right Suitcase for Your Trip

The best luggage depends on your trip and how you travel. Compare bag type, full outside dimensions, weight, wheels, construction, and warranty before buying.

There is no single best luggage for every traveler. Choose a personal item, carry-on, or checked suitcase to match your trip, packing needs, mobility, and budget—and check the airline’s current rules before buying. For a carry-on, measure the entire bag from the outside, including wheels, handles, and other protrusions; a marketing label alone does not guarantee it will fit.

Start with the kind of trip and bag you need

Personal-item bags, carry-ons, and checked suitcases serve different purposes. A short trip with light packing may suit a carry-on; longer trips or heavier loads may call for checked luggage. A personal item is a separate, smaller category whose permitted size and number depend on the airline and itinerary.

Do not assume one size rule applies to every flight. The FAA advises travelers to check with their airline for carry-on item limits and maximum sizes. Check the rules for your specific itinerary close to departure, especially if you have connecting flights or more than one carrier.

How to choose the right luggage

1. Confirm fit using the full outside dimensions

Measure height, width, and depth at the bag’s widest points, including wheels, handles, and protrusions. Compare those measurements with the airline’s current limits rather than relying on a “carry-on” or “airline-approved” label. Consumer Reports reported that 9 of 11 carry-on models it measured were larger than their manufacturers claimed; the search result does not state when that investigation took place, so it is a reason to measure your own bag, not a current market-wide statistic.

Also consider usable interior space. Consumer Reports’ buying guide notes that squared corners, externally mounted handles, and integrated rather than protruding outer compartments can help preserve packing room. An expansion panel may add capacity, but the expanded bag still has to meet the applicable size rules.

2. Weigh the bag and consider how you will move it

Check the empty weight, then think about stairs, crowded terminals, uneven sidewalks, and whether you can lift the packed bag into an overhead bin or car. A lighter suitcase leaves more of your own weight allowance for belongings, but light construction is not automatically durable.

Wheels can reduce the effort of moving a loaded case. Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey of 8,168 members who own carry-ons found wheelability and durability among the features owners prize most. In older Consumer Reports coverage, more than 60 percent of respondents named wheelability as the most important attribute, and 31 percent of recent luggage purchasers who replaced luggage wanted a lighter item; that article also reported an expert recommendation of a wheeled bag no heavier than 7.5 pounds. Those older figures are historical findings, not universal specifications or current survey results.

Two-wheel bags typically roll behind you, while four-wheel spinners can turn in multiple directions beside you. Try the steering and handle height if possible, and consider how the bag handles the surfaces you commonly encounter.

3. Compare construction and the parts most likely to wear

Hard-shell and soft-sided luggage involve trade-offs rather than a universal winner. Consumer Reports says aluminum can be the most durable option, but it is heavier. Soft-sided bags may offer exterior pockets; when comparing them, look at the fabric and seams as well as the zippers. Across either type, inspect wheel attachment, handles, zipper tracks, and corners. Consumer Reports’ buying guide identifies zippers as a useful durability indicator and advises shoppers to examine warranty coverage.

Durability tests can offer one point of comparison, not a promise of how every bag will perform on every trip. Consumer Reports says its 2025 hard-shell carry-on protocol filled each bag with fabric until its total weight was almost 18 pounds, then wheeled it on an obstacle-studded conveyor belt for the equivalent of more than 30 miles. That describes the publisher’s test method, not independent validation or proof of real-world performance in all conditions.

4. Check the warranty, repair options, and total cost

Read the warranty terms before purchase. Check what damage or parts are covered, how long coverage lasts, what exclusions apply, and whether you can obtain replacement wheels, handles, or other parts. A long warranty is useful only if its terms and repair process suit the way you expect to use the bag. Compare the purchase price with the likely cost and convenience of repairs; there is no single warranty or price that makes one suitcase best for every traveler.

Which type of luggage should you choose?

Type Best suited to What to check
Personal-item bag Travelers who want a smaller bag for essentials and whose airline permits it for the itinerary. Airline size and item rules; whether the bag fits under the seat when packed.
Carry-on suitcase Travelers who want cabin luggage and can pack within the carrier’s limits. Full external dimensions, empty weight, overhead-bin fit, wheels, handle, and interior capacity.
Checked suitcase Longer trips, heavier packing, or items unsuitable for cabin baggage. Carrier restrictions and fees, packed weight, shell and component durability, and repair support.

Consumer Reports’ buying guide likewise treats personal items, carry-ons, and checked bags as distinct choices shaped by trip length and airline restrictions. The appropriate category depends on both your packing needs and the rules that apply to your flight.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Identify whether you need a personal item, carry-on, or checked bag for this trip.
  • Check the airline’s current item, size, and weight rules for your itinerary.
  • Measure the complete outside of a carry-on, including wheels, handles, and protrusions.
  • Compare empty weight, interior layout, and usable capacity—not just the advertised exterior dimensions.
  • Consider how the wheels and handle work for your body, route, and typical surfaces.
  • Inspect zippers, wheels, handles, seams, and corners; compare construction trade-offs.
  • Read warranty exclusions and look into repair access and replacement parts.
