Write the amount in numerals in the check’s amount box, then write the same amount in words on the amount line. Express cents as a fraction over 100, such as 50/100, or spell them out. Before signing, check that both amounts match; for U.S. checks, federal consumer guidance says the amount in words is used if the two conflict.
How to write the amount on a check
- Enter the numerals. Put the amount, including dollars and cents, in the small amount box—for example, $105.50. Chase and U.S. Bank show this approach.
- Write the dollar amount in words. For $105.00, one bank’s example is “one hundred five dollars only.”
- Show any cents. Write them as a fraction over 100 or spell them out. For $105.50, examples include “one hundred five dollars and 50/100” and “one hundred five dollars and fifty cents.”
- Finish the line clearly. For an even-dollar amount, include a cents expression such as 00/100 or use “only,” as appropriate to the printed line. If the check already prints “Dollars,” follow its layout and avoid making the wording confusing.
- Compare both amounts before signing. Make sure the words and numerals represent exactly the same amount.

These examples differ in punctuation and in where “dollars” appears. The sources do not establish one required wording for every check design. Use clear wording that matches the amount, and follow any instructions from your bank and the labels already printed on the check.
What if the words and numbers do not match?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says that when the words and numerals differ, the amount spelled out in words is used. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency likewise explains that, under state laws, words prevail over numbers when a check has contradictory terms; its page was last reviewed in April 2021 and says its information is not legal advice. This is a reason to prevent a mismatch, not a way to correct one after issuing a check. If you notice an error, contact your bank for instructions rather than relying on the discrepancy to be resolved a particular way.
Make the amount line clear
Write legibly in blue or black ink; U.S. Bank recommends a blue or black gel pen. Nebraska Banking and Finance advises drawing a line through any blank space remaining after the written amount as an alteration precaution. That is guidance, not a universal legal requirement. Treasury guidance explains that writing an amount in words can provide disbursing offices and Treasury greater safety against alteration.

Which wording should you use?
Either a fraction over 100 or spelled-out cents is illustrated in bank guidance. The practical choice is to use a format that fits the check’s printed line, remains unambiguous, and follows your bank’s directions. The cited material concerns U.S. dollar checks; it does not establish wording rules for checks in other countries. If your check has an unusual layout or your bank rejects it, ask the bank that will process it.
