For an online degree you can move through at your own pace, compare the exact program and its pacing rules—not just the college name. Western Governors University (WGU) builds competency-based learning into its model; the University of Maine at Presque Isle offers its YourPace program in scheduled eight-week sessions; Purdue Global offers ExcelTrack in selected degrees. These are representative options, not a definitive ranking of every self-paced college.

What “self-paced” means at these colleges

Self-paced does not always mean deadline-free. It can mean progressing after demonstrating mastery, choosing how quickly to work within a session, or controlling course load under a particular program format. Deadlines, assessments and required activities can still apply, and the rules may differ by degree.

  • WGU: A competency-based model with self-paced study and fixed tuition per term. WGU also describes mentor support. WGU
  • UMPI YourPace: A competency-based program organized into eight-week sessions. UMPI YourPace
  • Purdue Global ExcelTrack: A self-paced option available in selected degrees, rather than a description of every Purdue Global course. Purdue Global program catalog

Option How pacing works Published cost information Important qualification
Western Governors University Competency-based, self-paced study; fixed tuition per term. WGU’s homepage reports a 24-month median time to complete a bachelor’s degree and an estimated $16,600 median total cost for an undergraduate degree, based on its Fiscal Year 2025 Annual Report. Those are WGU-reported medians and estimates, not a completion promise or price for every degree. Check current program tuition and fees. WGU names NWCCU as its institutional accreditor. Accreditation information
University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI), YourPace Competency-based program with eight-week sessions. The official page displayed $1,800 per undergraduate session and $2,450 per graduate session when accessed October 3, 2026. These are session rates, not the total cost of a degree. UMPI says completion time depends on prior coursework, relevant work experience, study time and courses completed per session. Applicants must be at least 20 at application, according to the page; confirm current admissions rules. Program inventory
Purdue University Global, ExcelTrack Self-paced format for selected programs; catalog guidance recommends it for learners with substantial college credit or field experience who are motivated to study independently. The cited cybersecurity bachelor’s page displayed 34 courses and a $2,500 tuition rate per term when crawled approximately three weeks before October 3, 2026. The displayed rate and course count apply to that cybersecurity page, not all ExcelTrack degrees or the whole degree’s total price. Purdue Global says pace and savings vary by individual. How to choose the right format

Start with the credential you need, then test whether the program’s structure, transfer rules and likely total cost fit your circumstances. A school may offer self-paced study for only part of its catalog.

  1. Find the exact degree and concentration. Confirm it is currently offered in the self-paced format, and check any field-specific requirements. UMPI publishes a YourPace program list; Purdue Global’s catalog lists its programs.
  2. Ask what “self-paced” permits. Check session or term dates, assignment and assessment deadlines, minimum or maximum course load, and whether any synchronous, in-person, clinical, lab or practicum work is required.
  3. Get a transfer-credit evaluation. Ask which prior credits apply to the intended degree, whether program-specific transfer caps apply, and whether prior learning can be assessed. Accepted credits can change how much coursework—and how many paid periods—remain.
  4. Estimate the full cost using the school’s billing unit. WGU charges by term, UMPI YourPace displays tuition by session, and Purdue Global’s cited ExcelTrack page displays a program-specific per-term rate. Estimate the number of terms or sessions you may need, then add applicable fees and materials. Ask about financial aid eligibility and refund rules; a headline rate alone is not a degree-cost comparison.
  5. Check support and assessment access. Ask about mentor or advisor availability, faculty interaction, grading turnaround, tutoring and how assessments are delivered. Independent pacing still depends on getting timely academic support.
  6. Verify accreditation and career eligibility. Confirm the institution’s current accreditor and, if your career requires it, the specific program’s professional approval and the rules in the state or jurisdiction where you plan to work. Institutional accreditation alone does not establish licensure eligibility.

Can you finish faster if you already know the material?

Potentially, if the program lets you demonstrate mastery or complete more work within a paid term or session. Existing credits, relevant experience, available study time and assessment requirements all matter. WGU’s published 24-month bachelor’s median is a school-reported figure, not a promise for an individual student. Purdue Global explicitly says ExcelTrack pace and time and cost savings vary by individual. Ask each school how it evaluates existing knowledge and what happens if you need more time than expected.

Are these programs accredited?

WGU identifies the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) as its institutional accreditor. Purdue Global says it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC); it also notes that some programs have additional programmatic accreditation. Purdue Global accreditation information

These institutional statements do not establish that every program holds a professional accreditation or meets every state’s licensing requirements. If you are studying for a regulated profession, confirm the exact degree and jurisdiction with the school and the relevant licensing authority before enrolling.
