The BBC launched a subscription for the US version of BBC.com on June 26, 2025. The current price page lists $8.99 a month or $49.99 for the first year, then $89.99 a year at renewal, before any applicable taxes. That paid service is separate from BBC iPlayer and UK BBC platforms.
What changed for US readers?
The paywall applies to BBC.com and the BBC app as international commercial services for audiences outside the UK. It does not mean the BBC introduced a subscription for its UK services. BBC News reported the US website launch and its initial pricing on June 26, 2025; the current BBC Help pages describe a broader subscription offer that includes the app.
BBC Help says access is determined in part by device geolocation. A US location can therefore show the US subscription offer even if an account is set to the UK.
How much does a BBC subscription cost in the US?
BBC Help’s price page, checked October 3, 2026, lists the following US prices. The page does not show when this schedule took effect, so these are current listed terms rather than confirmed launch-era prices.

At the listed rates, the first year of the annual plan costs less than 12 months at $8.99 per month. The annual renewal is a separate, higher amount. The launch report’s $49.99 annual figure described the offer in June 2025; it should not be read as the current flat annual renewal price.
What does the subscription include?
BBC Help lists full news and feature stories, video, podcasts, a 24/7 livestream of the BBC News channel, ad-free documentary series and films, early-access podcasts, and other content. Available benefits can vary by region, and BBC Help says availability and features may change over time.

What can you still access for free?
The BBC’s listed free options include selected global breaking news, live BBC Radio 4 and World Service streams, World Service Languages, and a range of newsletters and podcasts. BBC Help currently says there is no free trial.
Does the US subscription include BBC iPlayer?
No. BBC Help says iPlayer is not included in the BBC.com subscription. iPlayer is available only in the UK and requires a valid UK TV licence. The US subscription and UK services have different geographic, rights and access rules.

Paying the UK TV Licence fee does not automatically remove the US paywall when you are physically in the United States. BBC Help says the services use device geolocation. It gives a specific travel exception: UK TV Licence payers visiting the US or Canada may continue to use their usual content in the UK BBC News app if they downloaded the latest version from the UK app stores before travelling.

- If you want iPlayer, do not subscribe on the assumption it is included; it is a separate UK service with its own eligibility requirements.
