Mike Lynch died when his yacht, Bayesian, sank off Porticello, Sicily, on 19 August 2024. Seven of the 22 people aboard were killed. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said in an interim assessment published in May 2025 that extreme wind was sufficient to knock the yacht over; investigators have not presented that assessment as a final account.
What happened to Mike Lynch’s yacht?
Bayesian, a privately owned, UK-registered sailing yacht, was anchored near Porticello after moving there from Cefalù to shelter from forecast weather. Rain began early on 19 August 2024, winds increased and the yacht began listing. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chronology records winds above 70 knots and a violent heel of about 90 degrees to starboard at approximately 04:06 local time, followed by the sinking.
There were 12 guests and 10 crew aboard. Six guests and one crew member died; the other 15 people survived. The NTSB identifies the yacht as 184 feet long, with a 237-foot mast and a retractable keel. Those particulars describe the vessel; they do not establish that any single design feature caused the sinking.
What have investigators said caused the sinking?
The MAIB’s interim assessment said the extreme wind experienced by Bayesian was sufficient to knock the yacht over. Andrew Moll OBE, the MAIB’s Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, said on 15 May 2025: “The findings indicate that the extreme wind experienced by Bayesian was sufficient to knock the yacht over. Further, once the yacht had heeled beyond an angle of 70° the situation was irrecoverable.”

Moll also stressed the provisional nature of the findings: “The results will be refined as the investigation proceeds, and more information becomes available.” The NTSB’s chronology records a heel of about 90 degrees; the MAIB’s statement describes the point beyond 70 degrees after which it assessed the situation as irrecoverable. These figures refer to different descriptions in the official accounts, not a single settled measurement of the entire event.
The MAIB cautioned that its account was based on limited verified evidence and could change as more information became available, including evidence held by Italian authorities and examination of the wreck. It warned against treating unverified public speculation as established fact. The interim assessment should not be simplified into a definitive finding that a waterspout, crew error or one particular open hatch caused the sinking.

Why is the MAIB account not a final ruling on responsibility?
The MAIB conducts a safety investigation to establish causes and circumstances so that future accidents can be prevented. Its report says that this work is not intended to determine liability or apportion blame. The Italian criminal investigation is a separate process; the May 2025 MAIB report says it was led by the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office. The NTSB identifies the UK MAIB as the lead safety investigator and marks its own participation complete.
The official records cited here do not establish whether a final MAIB report or a final outcome in the Italian case has since been issued. The interim safety findings therefore should not be presented as a criminal finding or as the completed official account of the sinking.

What was the connection to the HP-Autonomy case?
In June 2024, a US federal jury in San Francisco acquitted Lynch in the fraud prosecution related to Hewlett-Packard’s acquisition of Autonomy. The Associated Press reported that the Bayesian voyage was in celebration of the acquittal. That explains why the trip received particular attention; it does not establish any connection between the trial and the yacht’s sinking.
