Costco’s most overlooked membership benefits are a mix of access that Gold Star members already have and extras reserved for Executive members. Gold Star includes warehouse and online shopping, pharmacy and optical services, gas stations, worldwide warehouse access and more; Executive adds a 2% Reward on qualifying purchases and selected additional benefits. The reward has important exclusions, so the upgrade does not automatically pay for itself.
What every Costco member already gets
Costco’s comparison lists these benefits for both Gold Star and Executive members:
- Shopping in Costco warehouses and on Costco.com, including Costco Business Centers and warehouses worldwide.
- Access to Costco Pharmacy, Optical, Hearing Aid Center and gas stations.
- One free household card.
- Membership coverage under Costco’s satisfaction guarantee, subject to terms and limitations.
That makes the distinction important: many services that can feel like “hidden” perks are not exclusive to Executive. For example, Pharmacy, Optical and Hearing Aid Center access appears in the comparison for both tiers. Check the Costco membership comparison for the current side-by-side details.

How the Executive 2% Reward works—and the break-even math
Executive members can earn a 2% annual Reward on qualified purchases, currently described by Costco as capped at up to $1,250. The cap and eligible-purchase rules are subject to Costco’s current terms, so consult the Executive Rewards terms rather than assuming every Costco transaction counts.
The simple upgrade-fee calculation
Using Costco’s listed $65 Executive upgrade fee, the arithmetic break-even is $3,250 in qualified annual purchases: $3,250 × 2% = $65. This is a calculation, not a prediction or promise. Costco states that the Reward is not guaranteed to equal or exceed the upgrade fee. Other Executive benefits may affect an individual member’s decision, but their value depends on whether the member actually uses them.

Who earns the Reward, and when?
- Only purchases by the account’s Primary member and active Primary Household Cardholder apply toward the Reward.
- Purchases made before upgrading to Executive do not qualify.
- For eligible Costco Travel purchases, the trip must be completed, and the member must hold Executive status when travel begins.
- Costco says the Reward is issued around two months before renewal. Its FAQ says it can be used toward most merchandise at U.S. warehouse front-end registers, but not at self-checkout; check the live FAQ for current redemption details.
Common exclusions
Costco’s exclusions include gasoline, membership fees, Costco Services, food court purchases, many fees and taxes, and purchases through sites not hosted by Costco. Additional state and category-specific exclusions apply. See the current reward terms for the full, current rules.

Earlier shopping hours
Costco currently presents earlier shopping hours as an Executive benefit on its Join Costco page. Hours can change and may differ by warehouse, so check with your local location before planning a visit around them.

Costco Travel—and a Viator offer with a separate rule
All members can use Costco Travel; Executive status may add travel value, and qualifying travel purchases can earn the 2% Reward after the trip is completed under the conditions above. Costco lists restrictions and exceptions, so compare the actual itinerary and terms rather than assuming an Executive discount applies to every booking.
Costco’s Executive Reward FAQ describes a Costco Travel partnership with Viator launched June 4, 2026. It says U.S. members can access more than 400,000 activities, tours and excursions worldwide, with a Costco-exclusive 15% discount applied automatically at checkout through CostcoTravel.com. The same FAQ says these partnership excursions do not count toward the Executive annual 2% Reward. Verify that the offer and terms remain available when booking. Costco Services: possible value, not universal discounts
Costco lists service areas that include travel, auto and home insurance, the Costco Auto Program, pet insurance, bottled-water delivery, payment processing, and other home or business services. Executive members may receive extra benefits or greater discounts on selected services, but that does not mean every service is discounted, available everywhere or directly provided by Costco. Check the provider, local availability, eligibility, actual price and service-specific restrictions. Pharmacy, optical, hearing and tire services
Pharmacy, Optical and Hearing Aid Center access is part of both membership tiers. Costco also highlights prescription services, optical and tire services on its Join Costco page; installation and other tire benefits may have product-specific limitations. Treat these as services to compare and verify locally, not as a guarantee that every product or service will be the lowest-priced option.

Costco says it will cancel and refund membership fees if a member is dissatisfied, while also noting that terms and limitations apply. The guarantee is not a promise about how a particular case will be handled; consult Costco’s current membership terms or customer service for your situation.

- Start with what you already use. Gold Star includes broad shopping and service access; do not count those shared benefits as an Executive-only reason to upgrade.
- Estimate qualifying spending, not total Costco spending. Use Costco’s current exclusions and household-card rules to estimate the purchases that actually count toward the Reward.
- Compare the estimate with the fee. At the listed $65 upgrade fee, $3,250 of qualifying annual spend produces $65 at 2%, before tax. This is only break-even arithmetic and does not guarantee that your Reward will match the fee.
- Value extra benefits only if you expect to use them. Check local early hours and specific service or travel offers, including their eligibility and terms.
Costco’s published figures describe its program, not typical member savings; no specific annual savings amount is established for the average member.
