In TallyPrime, record a supplier purchase return with a Debit Note and a customer sales return with a Credit Note. Open Alt+G > Create Voucher > F10 (Other Vouchers), select the voucher type, enter the party and transaction details, and save. The exact fields depend on whether the voucher is in voucher mode or invoice mode and on your company’s tax configuration.
Choose the note that matches the transaction
| Transaction | Voucher type | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Returning goods to a supplier | Debit Note | Supplier, original purchase invoice details, returned stock item, quantity and rate; include applicable tax details. |
| Recording a customer’s return of goods | Credit Note | Customer and the relevant original sale, item and tax information as required by the selected mode and company setup. |
The voucher type follows the transaction direction in these TallyHelp workflows; it is not simply a choice based on whether the amount is going up or down. For other commercial adjustments, such as a change to purchase value, the appropriate note depends on the adjustment and the business’s accounting treatment.
Open the voucher and check the entry mode
- In TallyPrime, press Alt+G and choose Create Voucher.
- Press F10 (Other Vouchers), then choose Debit Note or Credit Note.
- Check whether the entry screen is in voucher mode or invoice mode. TallyHelp documents both modes; the available fields and workflow can differ with mode and company configuration. If the voucher type is missing or the screen differs, review the company’s F11 features and active voucher mode. See TallyHelp’s debit and credit note feature guidance.
Record a supplier purchase return with a Debit Note
- Open Alt+G > Create Voucher > F10 (Other Vouchers) > Debit Note.
- Select the supplier in Party A/c name.
- Enter the original supplier invoice number and date in Original Invoice Details.
- Select the returned stock item and enter the quantity and rate. Enter applicable tax details if required by the transaction and configuration.
- Review the party, invoice reference, item, quantity, rate and tax entries, then press Ctrl+A to save.
TallyHelp’s purchase-return example describes this as recording returned goods and reducing expenses or liabilities in the books. The precise ledger impact depends on the ledgers and transaction setup, so use your organization’s accounting policy. See TallyHelp’s Debit Note entry steps.
Record a customer sales return with a Credit Note
- Open Alt+G > Create Voucher > F10 (Other Vouchers) > Credit Note.
- Select the customer and refer to the original sale so the return is associated with the right transaction.
- Enter the returned item and relevant quantity, value and tax details in the fields available for the selected voucher mode.
- Check the entry against the original sale and your accounting and tax setup, then save the voucher.
TallyHelp identifies Credit Note as the voucher for a sales return. The specific current sales-return screen steps can vary by TallyPrime release and configuration; confirm the field sequence in the installed version. Official legacy entry guidance also describes debit and credit note entry in voucher or invoice mode, but older shortcut instructions are version-specific. See TallyHelp’s entry guidance.

Handle GST fields and reverse-charge cases carefully
The documented GST purchase-return workflow is specific to the Indian GST context. It calls for the original invoice details, returned stock items, GST details, a reason, and the supplier’s note number and date when applicable. The sample reason shown is 01-Sales Return. Use the reason and fields appropriate to your actual transaction rather than treating the example as a universal rule. See TallyHelp’s GST purchase-return workflow.
For GST sales and purchase ledgers, TallyHelp says to set GST applicability as applicable and configure HSN/SAC and rate details as required. Purchase-ledger setup may also include reverse-charge settings. See TallyHelp’s GST ledger setup instructions.

In the reverse-charge purchase-return example, TallyHelp uses a separate Journal voucher to record the tax-liability reversal, with the relevant GST statutory adjustment details. The debit note and journal voucher appear differently in that reporting example. This is a scenario-specific Indian GST procedure, not a universal instruction; check the applicable rules and your accountant’s guidance before posting tax adjustments.
