The Rhodes Trust assesses academic ability, sustained achievement beyond the classroom, service and values, and character and leadership. Applicants must also qualify under the rules for their specific Rhodes constituency and meet the requirements for their chosen Oxford course. Because eligibility, application steps, and deadlines vary by constituency, the first practical step is to identify the right route and check its current official guidance.
What Rhodes selection committees look for
The Rhodes Trust sets out four broad selection criteria. They describe qualities for committees to assess, not a formula or a checklist that guarantees selection.
Academic excellence
The Trust calls this “Literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence).” Its description emphasizes intellectual curiosity, a love of learning, critical thought, strong academic performance, and success in rigorous courses. Grades matter, but they are one part of the assessment.
Energy and sustained achievement beyond the classroom
The criterion “Energy to use one’s talents to the full” covers depth of commitment and accomplishment in pursuits such as sport, music, debate, dance, theatre, or art. The Trust particularly notes teamwork. In practice, a sustained contribution and evidence of mastery are more relevant than simply listing many activities.

Values and service
The Trust names truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness, and fellowship. It describes service as a serious duty that can take place locally or internationally, in a community large or small.
Character and leadership
“Moral force of character and instincts to lead” includes initiative, the ability to inspire others, leadership in thought and action, and interest in fellow human beings. Leadership is not limited to holding a formal title; the stated criterion concerns how a person acts and engages with others.
The Trust says there is no single “type” of person selected and links the scholarship’s strength to rigorous criteria and diversity. No one activity, academic result, or polished application narrative should be treated as a guarantee.
First establish whether you are eligible to apply
Rhodes Scholarships are organized by constituency, and the Trust says eligibility criteria, application requirements, and selection processes vary somewhat by constituency. Identify the constituency that applies to you, then use its current eligibility checker and candidate information rather than relying on a general summary.

Check the route’s rules for:
- Citizenship or another required connection to the constituency, including any residency or education conditions.
- Age limits and the relevant dates used to calculate them.
- Degree completion timing and academic standing.
- English-language requirements and the entry requirements of the Oxford course you want to study.
- Required application materials, nomination or institutional certification steps, and local deadlines.
The Canada constituency, for example, directs applicants to its own candidate information, referee guidance, covered-course information, and institutional-certification instructions. The exact requirements for another constituency may differ.
How the application route affects the process
There is no single worldwide application process or deadline. The U.S. page’s 2026 cycle, for instance, listed applications opening on 1 July and closing at 23:59 Eastern Time on 7 October 2026, with U.S. selection conducted through 16 regional committees. Those dates and arrangements apply to that U.S. cycle, not to applicants everywhere or to later years.

Some routes also have specific nomination requirements. For the 2026 Global nomination route, Rhodes Trust guidance says senior institutional officials may nominate candidates, each institution may nominate up to three, and the nomination letter is submitted through Embark. The guidance says an applicant cannot submit without that nomination. This is a Global-route instruction; do not assume it applies to every constituency.
Use the current official instructions for your route to confirm who submits each item, how it must be submitted, and when it is due. A missed local step or deadline can prevent an otherwise qualified person from applying.

What GPA do you need to become a Rhodes Scholar?
The Rhodes Trust’s 2026 Global nominating-institution guidance says an applicant needs an undergraduate degree, normally a bachelor’s, that meets or exceeds the entry requirements for the chosen full-time Oxford course. It adds that, given the intense competition for Oxford places, candidates may have a greater chance of successful admission with a First Class Honours degree or equivalent, a GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher without rounding, or equivalent international grades.
That 3.70 figure is an Oxford-admission competitiveness benchmark in the 2026 Global guidance. It is not a universal GPA cutoff for Rhodes eligibility or selection across all constituencies. Check both the Oxford course requirements and the rules for your own route.
A practical way to prepare
- Identify your constituency. Use the Rhodes Trust’s current constituency information and eligibility checker to determine the route that applies to you.
- Map the formal requirements. Record the route’s age and degree-timing rules, academic requirements, required materials, nomination or certification process, and deadline for your intended cycle.
- Check Oxford course requirements. Confirm that you meet, or can meet, the entry requirements for a full-time course you intend to pursue. Do not substitute a general GPA figure for the course’s own requirements.
- Review your record against the four criteria. Be ready to show academic strength, sustained achievement, service and values, and character and leadership with concrete examples. The criteria do not prescribe a particular activity or personal story.
- Follow the route-specific submission instructions. Confirm the current process directly with the relevant constituency, especially for nomination, institutional certification, referees, and deadlines.
How many Rhodes Scholarships are available?
The Rhodes Trust’s 2026 Global guidance states that two Global Scholarships are available each year. That figure is specific to the Global route; it is not the worldwide total across all Rhodes constituencies.
