The IRS app replaced IRS2Go on September 25, 2026, adding secure mobile access to selected tax-account services while leaving IRS.gov as the broader source for tax tools and information. Separately, AARP’s October 2 weekly update reported that scientists expect a milder flu season than last year, based on Southern Hemisphere data. That is an outlook, not a guarantee.

What can I do in the new IRS app?

The free IRS app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Its launch announcement describes a mobile way to reach selected tax services, not a replacement for every IRS online service. The IRS announcement and the agency’s FAQ list features that may be available after secure sign-in, depending on the taxpayer’s account and the service:

  • Check refund and amended-return status.
  • See available balance information, make payments and review payment activity.
  • View selected notices and letters, and access available tax records and transcripts.
  • Manage certain profile and communication preferences, and retrieve an Identity Protection PIN.

Some tasks do not require signing in: checking refund status, making certain payments and finding free filing help. For secure account access, the IRS says the app uses the IRS Individual Online Account sign-in process. A secure browser window opens for sign-in and then returns the user to the app. The agency says taxpayer account information is not stored as permanent account data on the device; that is the IRS’s description, not an independent security assessment.

Do I need to download a new app if I already use IRS2Go?

If automatic app updates are enabled, the IRS says IRS2Go users do not need a separate download. Otherwise, update the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The FAQ lists minimum requirements of iOS or iPadOS 15.1, or Android 7.0; requirements and features can change, so check the current app listing if your device cannot install or update it.

Is the new IRS app replacing IRS.gov?

No. The IRS describes the app as extending selected Individual Online Account features to mobile. IRS.gov remains the comprehensive destination for tax information, forms, tools and services. Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account remain available through IRS.gov rather than the new app.

For safety, reach the app through IRS.gov or the official Apple App Store and Google Play listings. The IRS warns about look-alike apps and unsolicited messages that claim to provide account access; do not follow an unexpected link to sign in.

Will this flu season be milder than last year?

AARP’s update for the week of October 2, 2026, says scientists expect a milder flu season than the previous season, based on health data from countries in the Southern Hemisphere whose flu seasons have already occurred. The report gives no numerical forecast or named scientist’s estimate, so the comparison is directional rather than a quantified prediction. It is also an expectation, not a guarantee.

This outlook is reported by AARP, not established here as a forecast issued by the CDC or another U.S. health agency. AARP’s report does not identify a specific agency forecast for the 2026–27 U.S. season.

Should I still consider a flu vaccine if the season may be milder?

Yes. A milder seasonal outlook does not mean flu will be absent or that an individual’s risk of severe illness is negligible. AARP’s update says vaccination can meaningfully lower the risk of severe flu, but it does not provide an effectiveness percentage. Consider vaccination based on your circumstances and consult a healthcare professional for personal medical advice.
