How do state income taxes affect retirement income?
Florida
Florida does not impose a personal income tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue’s FAQ captured October 3, 2026. That does not mean a Florida resident pays no taxes; it addresses personal income tax at the state level. Florida Department of Revenue: personal income tax FAQ.
California
California’s resident income tax rules cover qualified retirement plan and IRA income, and residents are generally taxed on income from outside California as well. Social Security benefits are excluded from California taxable income. The effect depends on the retiree’s income sources, residency, and applicable tax year. See the California Franchise Tax Board’s 2025 tax instructions and its guidance on income types and taxation, updated January 7, 2026.

Daily life and travel
Consider the routine you want: recreation, social connections, travel links, and the services you use often. The cited figures do not rate lifestyle quality, so visit at the times of year you expect to spend there and assess the actual neighborhoods rather than relying on a citywide label.
