NEAR Intents general manager Alex Shevchenko announced that the approximately $3.8 million lost in an exploit had been returned in full, after the project gave the alleged exploiter 48 hours to return the funds. The announcement is a reported recovery claim: available coverage does not independently reconcile every return transaction or provide a full technical postmortem.

What happened to NEAR Intents?

On October 1, 2026, The Block reported that NEAR Intents had halted services after an exploit caused approximately $3.8 million in losses. The reported vulnerability involved the interaction between Omni deposit and withdrawal infrastructure and the NEAR Intents smart contract. The Block said the contract flaw had been patched and NEAR had pledged to compensate affected users in full. The Block’s incident report provides the initial account.

In a recovery report published October 3 by Cointelegraph and republished by LCX, Shevchenko said the funds had been returned. Coverage described the announcement as following a 48-hour responsible-disclosure window, during which the project said it had identified the person responsible. That identification is the project’s reported claim; the available accounts do not explain how the person was identified or independently establish their identity. LCX’s republication attributes the recovery announcement to Shevchenko.

Was the $3.8 million returned?

Shevchenko’s statement, as quoted by Cointelegraph via LCX, was: “The funds from the $3.8M NEAR Intents hack were sent back in full.” That supports describing the recovery as NEAR Intents’ announced full return, not as a transaction-by-transaction total independently verified by the available reports.

BlockTempo reported that a Bitcoin address published for returns received about 34.59 BTC. Its account also said Shevchenko acknowledged that other routes accounted for the remainder, without explaining those routes. The address total alone therefore does not reconcile the full amount the project said was recovered. BlockTempo’s account reports the address figure and the missing route details.

The Block also reported that investigator ZachXBT traced funds through KuCoin and onward to Bitcoin. That reported trace does not, on its own, establish the complete path of the funds returned.

How did the exploit happen?

The reported issue was a bug in how Omni deposit and withdrawal infrastructure interacted with the NEAR Intents smart contract. The Block said the contract flaw was patched. The reports available here do not provide a complete technical postmortem, so they do not establish the precise exploit sequence, the full set of affected transactions, or how the flaw was triggered.

What did the 48-hour ultimatum mean?

Coverage says NEAR Intents gave the alleged exploiter 48 hours to return the funds through a responsible-disclosure window. After announcing the recovery, Shevchenko said: “We are stopping the investigation. Please use bug bounties instead of disrupting the services.” The statement points to bug bounties as the project’s preferred channel for reporting vulnerabilities; the available reporting does not identify a specific bounty program or its terms.

What happened to service availability?

The Block reported that deposits and withdrawals on 11 networks were expected to remain disrupted longer than the near-term reopening of services after the patch. That was the status described around the initial incident, not confirmation of current availability. The reports cited here do not verify whether every network or service has since resumed normal operation.
