Who Qualifies for Trump’s One-Time $90 Medicare Payment?

The White House says most Medicare Part B enrollees qualify for a one-time $90 payment, except people whose Part B premiums are paid by Medicaid or who pay IRMAA.

The White House says most people enrolled in Medicare Part B qualify for a one-time $90 payment. It specifically excludes people whose Part B premiums are paid by Medicaid and people who pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). For an individual eligibility check, call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

Who is eligible for the $90 Medicare payment?

The White House fact sheet dated October 2, 2026, says the payment is for more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees. Its rule is broad but not universal: “Most Medicare Part B enrollees are eligible for the payments.” The fact sheet names two exclusions.

  • You are not eligible if Medicaid already pays your Part B premiums.
  • You are not eligible if you pay IRMAA. This is the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount added to Medicare premiums for some beneficiaries.

The fact sheet does not provide a detailed eligibility worksheet or individual calculation tool. If you are enrolled in Part B and neither exclusion appears to apply, contact Medicare to check your own case rather than treating the general rule as a guarantee.

How much is the payment, and is it recurring?

The announced amount is $90 per person, paid once. Although President Donald Trump described it as “nearly $100,” the White House fact sheet specifies $90. The announcement says the payment is intended to help with Part B premiums; it does not describe a recurring monthly benefit or future payment schedule.

For context, Axios reported the standard 2026 Part B premium as $202.90 per month. The one-time $90 payment is less than half of that monthly premium; this is a comparison of the figures, not a claim that the payment covers half of every beneficiary’s costs.

How will eligible people receive the money?

The White House says payments are expected to begin in early October 2026. The announced delivery method depends on the recipient’s setup:

“Expected” describes the White House’s announced schedule, not confirmation that a particular payment has been issued or a promise of a specific arrival date. The fact sheet does not set out an application process; it describes deposits and mailed checks as the expected routes.

How do you check eligibility or payment status?

The White House lists separate official numbers for eligibility questions and payment-status questions:

  • Eligibility: Call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.
  • Payment status: Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

Use Medicare’s number to ask whether the stated exclusions apply to you. Use Social Security’s number for a question about whether a payment has been sent. The announced early-October timing alone does not establish that an individual deposit or check is already on its way.

Where is the money coming from?

The White House says the $90 payments will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund and states that $2 billion was allocated to that Fund. Federal law, at 42 U.S.C. § 1395iii, describes the Fund as available to the Secretary to make improvements under original Medicare fee-for-service Parts A and B.

That description does not, by itself, settle whether this particular direct-payment plan is legally authorized. In an October 3, 2026, report, The Washington Post said the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services had not immediately responded to questions about the authority for the payments. The legal question should therefore be treated as unresolved, not as a finding that the plan is either unlawful or definitively authorized.
