Five candidates are listed for the November 3, 2026, special election for Mississippi’s Seventh Judicial District, which covers Hinds County: Gwen Agho, Greta Mack Harris, Darla Palmer, Marvin L. Sanders, and Wendy Wilson White. The winner will serve the remainder of former District Attorney Jody Owens’s term, through January 2028. As of a September 30 report, voters had not yet received a comprehensive view of the candidates’ campaign funding.

Why is there a special election, and how long is the term?
Former District Attorney Jody Owens resigned after pleading guilty to a federal bribery conspiracy charge. Governor Tate Reeves appointed Brad McCullouch, who had worked in the Hinds County DA’s office, to serve pending the election, and called the special election for November 3, 2026. The winner fills the remainder of Owens’s term, which ends in January 2028. Reeves’s appointment and election announcement and local reporting on the vacancy provide the context.

Local reporting says McCullouch is not running because he lives outside the Seventh Judicial District. Reeves described his appointment rationale as confidence in the county office’s assistant district attorneys; that was the governor’s stated opinion, not an independent assessment of the office. What is known about campaign funding?
A September 30, 2026, Mississippi Today report said voters would not get their first comprehensive view of how the five candidates financed their campaigns until about a week before Election Day. The report describes shortened special-election disclosure rules and says last-minute contributions over $200 must be reported at least two days before voting. That means early snapshots may not capture all campaign money, and reported totals can change as required filings arrive. Mississippi Today’s campaign-finance report

The report noted that Sanders had held a fundraiser at the Continental Cigar Club in downtown Jackson. Asked about his campaign coffers, Sanders replied, “You’d have to ask my wife,” a joking remark as reported by Mississippi Today. Neither the event nor the quote establishes the amount raised or the source and total of campaign funds. Report and context
The sources available here do not provide final, comparable campaign-finance totals for all five candidates. For a current account, consult the candidates’ official filings and check the filing date and reporting period: a total from an earlier report is not necessarily the amount available at the end of the campaign.

How to compare the candidates as a voter
- Separate experience from policy. The reported backgrounds show different career paths, but they do not by themselves establish how a candidate would prioritize cases or manage the office.
- Look for direct answers. Compare candidates’ own statements about case review, caseloads, office management, and public accountability rather than inferring positions from job titles.
- Read finance filings by period. Identify the filing date and covered period, and distinguish contributions from other reported campaign receipts or spending where the filing does so.
- Use the official ballot for ballot details. The Secretary of State’s candidate list and sample ballot are the strongest sources for the names and listed party designations.
Election administration context
The Hinds County Election Commission says the county has 108 voting precincts and more than 149,000 registered voters. Those are countywide administrative figures, not a turnout forecast or a count of voters expected in this special election. Hinds County Election Commission
