Why European Gas Prices Pulled Back: Partial Middle East Supply Recovery

A June improvement in reopening expectations helped pull European gas prices back, but it did not mean Gulf LNG supply had returned to normal.

European gas prices eased in June 2026 because traders saw a better chance that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would resume and Gulf LNG deliveries would recover. That was a repricing of expectations, not proof that supply had returned to normal: on 3 September, the European Commission said Qatari LNG production was still shut down.

Why did European gas prices pull back?

Hopes of reopening changed the outlook

The Middle East conflict disrupted LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that had carried almost 20% of global LNG supply. The disruption caused strong price volatility, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). An interim agreement announced in mid-June aimed to provide a framework for reopening the strait. The IEA reported that LNG carrier transit rose after the announcement, though it remained only a fraction of pre-conflict levels.

That improvement in expectations put downward pressure on European and Asian gas prices. TTF month-ahead prices fell 6% between 15 and 26 June 2026 after the agreement announcement, the IEA reported. A price can fall when the risk of future scarcity recedes, even if current supply remains constrained.

The retreat did not erase the earlier price shock

Prices remained elevated in the second quarter. The IEA put the average TTF price for Q2 2026 at nearly USD 16 per million British thermal units (MBtu), 32% higher than in Q2 2025. The 6% June decline and the elevated quarterly average describe different periods and are not contradictory: the pullback came late in a quarter that had already experienced higher prices.

Has Middle East gas supply recovered?

Not fully, based on the European Commission’s update of 3 September 2026. It reported that Qatari LNG production remained shut down and that the Middle East was still unstable. Rising carrier transit after the June agreement was a sign of improving movement through the route, not confirmation that production, loading and exports had returned to normal.

The IEA’s forecast rested on assumptions, not verified outcomes: a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in Q3 2026, the return of operations at undamaged regional facilities by early Q4, and a progressive increase in Qatari and UAE LNG deliveries from July through October. Those assumptions should not be read as evidence that each milestone occurred.

Why can Gulf disruption matter to Europe even when Qatar is a limited supplier?

Direct exposure is smaller than the global price effect

The EU sourced 7% of its LNG from Qatar during winter 2025/26, equivalent to 4% of EU natural gas imports over that period, according to the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). Those figures show direct exposure for that period; they do not measure the wider price effect of competing for LNG on the global market.

Flexible cargoes connect European and Asian prices

ACER identifies competition with Asia for flexible LNG as a price risk. If buyers in Asia are willing to pay more, cargoes that could otherwise serve Europe may be drawn there. The European Commission says the TTF European benchmark closely tracks Asia’s JKM benchmark through arbitrage. As a result, a Gulf disruption can influence European prices even when Europe’s direct share of Qatari LNG is limited.

How to read the main indicators

Indicator What it tells you What it does not establish
Production and export volumes in Qatar and the UAE Whether LNG is being produced, loaded and delivered, and how far regional supply is returning. Restoration at an individual facility does not by itself establish full export normalization.
Hormuz access and LNG carrier transit Whether ships can pass through the key route and whether traffic is increasing. More transit does not show that carrier movements have returned to pre-conflict levels.
TTF–JKM price relationship How European and Asian demand signals compare as buyers compete for flexible LNG. A movement in one benchmark alone does not establish the cause of every price change.
EU storage, demand and import capacity How prepared the European system is to meet demand despite disruption. System readiness does not prevent wholesale prices from responding to global scarcity or uncertainty.

Does a pullback mean Europe faces no supply risk?

No immediate EU security-of-supply risk is not the same as no exposure to price volatility. On 3 September 2026, the European Commission said it saw no immediate EU supply risk even though Qatari production remained shut down and storage was low relative to prior years. Its Directorate-General for Energy also said: “Geopolitical uncertainty continues to drive significant price volatility.”

The distinction matters: storage, demand and import capacity affect whether Europe can obtain enough gas, while the cost of acquiring gas can still move with global competition and uncertainty. The Commission’s Spring 2026 downside scenario put late-2026 prices at EUR 80/MWh under prolonged disruption. That was a conditional scenario estimate, not a live price, baseline forecast or confirmed outcome.

What the dated price figures do—and do not—show

The reported TTF figures are tied to Q2 2026 and the 15–26 June period; they are not an October 3 settlement. No October 3 TTF price or verified aggregate Gulf export recovery is established here. For a current market decision, those questions require a live benchmark and current production, cargo and shipping information.
