SAMPAN—the South Asian Mortgage Professionals and Allies Network—has marked its first anniversary. In its first year, the network brought mortgage and protection professionals together around representation, career development and community, while a member described finding a stronger sense of belonging. The account comes from Mortgage Solutions; it reports the network’s aims and participants’ views, not independently measured industry outcomes.
What is SAMPAN?
SAMPAN stands for the South Asian Mortgage Professionals and Allies Network. As described by Tania Ahmed in Mortgage Solutions on October 2, 2026, it was established to support South Asian professionals working across mortgages and protection and to encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to consider careers in financial services.
The network also says it wants the mortgage industry to better understand factors that can shape homeownership journeys in South Asian communities. The article gives multigenerational living, family-supported deposits and attitudes toward financial advice as examples. These are considerations the network says matter; they should not be read as traits shared by every South Asian household.
Who founded SAMPAN?
The article names Gurpreet Chahal, Paul Purewal and Dina Bhudia as SAMPAN’s founders. Chahal said the founders saw a need and opportunity in the market:
#1 Best Overall
“We wanted to build something that gave South Asian professionals in our industry greater visibility, confidence and connection, while also helping the wider market better understand the communities we serve,” he said.
Purewal described the group as having grown from an informal conversation into a community spanning the mortgage market. He said the first year showed an appetite for collaboration and that future plans are intended to address members’ career ambitions and create opportunities. That is his assessment, rather than a quantified measure of demand.

What did SAMPAN do in its first year?
The first-year programme brought together lenders, brokers, distributors and other industry participants through events focused on career development, representation and community engagement. Mortgage Solutions reported two events:
- London launch: Supported by Lloyds, the event gave professionals a platform to share experiences and discuss allyship.
- Solihull event: Backed by Paragon, Skipton for Intermediaries and Dudley Building Society, it explored how to attract new talent and support career progression.
The article reports the events and their themes but provides no attendance figures or independently measured results. It does not establish how the programme changed recruitment, careers or homeownership outcomes.

Why did one member say SAMPAN meant more than she expected?
For member Sonya Matharu, involvement was personal as well as professional. She said it strengthened her connection to her South Asian identity and highlighted the value of community in the industry:
“Growing up, I always had a slightly complicated relationship with my South Asian identity. I never really felt ‘South Asian enough’ to have a voice in conversations about representation, so being part of SAMPAN has meant more to me than I probably expected,” she said.
She added: “I think that sense of community and belonging is what makes SAMPAN so important, and I’m really excited to see what comes next.” Her account offers one member’s perspective on belonging; it does not stand in for every member’s experience.
