Austria’s September 2026 inflation flash estimate was 3.5% year over year on the EU-harmonised HICP measure. The national CPI rate was 3.6%. What was Austria’s inflation rate in September 2026?
Statistics Austria’s October 2 flash estimate put annual inflation at 3.6% under Austria’s national Consumer Price Index (CPI) and 3.5% under the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). The monthly changes differed too: CPI rose 0.2% from August, while HICP rose 0.6%. These are separate measures, not alternative rounding of one figure. Statistics Austria’s September flash release gives the CPI figures; its HICP flash release reports the harmonised measure.
Why did CPI inflation rise from August?
The annual CPI rate increased from 3.2% in August to 3.6% in September, a rise of 0.4 percentage points. Statistics Austria attributed the full increase to higher fuel and heating oil prices. Energy prices were 14.5% higher than a year earlier in September, compared with a 9.9% annual increase in August.
Energy’s rapid rise explains the change in the headline rate, but it was not the largest contributor overall. Services prices rose 4.2% year over year and contributed 2.031 percentage points to CPI inflation, compared with energy’s 1.207 percentage-point contribution. Services represented 49.50% of the CPI basket, while energy represented 8.19%. The distinction matters: a category can have the fastest price increase without making the largest contribution to the overall rate.

What do CPI and HICP measure?
Austria’s CPI tracks household spending by people living in Austria. HICP is designed for comparisons across the European Union and also includes spending by non-resident tourists. The indices use different weights as well as different population coverage, so their annual and monthly rates can diverge. Statistics Austria cautions that a flash estimate should not be treated as interchangeable with subsequent CPI or HICP results. What the September breakdown says—and does not say
Alongside energy and services, Statistics Austria reported core inflation of 3.0%, defining this aggregate as industrial goods plus services. Industrial-goods prices rose 0.7% year over year, while food, tobacco and alcohol rose 1.0%. Those category movements offer context, but they do not change the agency’s explanation that fuel and heating oil caused the increase in the overall CPI rate from August.

How provisional is the flash estimate?
The figures are preliminary because the flash calculation uses prices available at the end of the reference month, before all collected data have arrived and undergone full statistical validation. Statistics Austria says around 80% to 90% of collected CPI prices are usually available for a flash estimate. Later price reports and ordinary corrections can change the figures in the subsequent releases.
The agency’s October 2 notice said preliminary September CPI and HICP results were scheduled for October 16, 2026, with final results scheduled for November 18, 2026. As of October 3, both release dates were still ahead. Statistics Austria also says the flash CPI estimate must not be used for contractual value adjustments; anyone calculating an index-linked payment should use the appropriate published CPI result and follow the contract’s terms.
