Reported war-risk insurance quotations for tankers making Saudi-linked calls at Yanbu reached about 3% of a vessel’s value in late September 2026, up from less than 1% in early July. That is a reported market quote—not a fixed tariff or a rate every tanker will pay. Actual premiums are privately negotiated and depend on the ship and voyage.

What “premiums triple” means

The comparison is between reported quotations for a defined war-risk exposure: below 1% of vessel value in early July 2026 and about 3% for a Saudi-linked Yanbu call in late September. The percentages describe reported quotes, not a guaranteed charge on every ship or a universal price for Red Sea transit. The September figures were relayed by Insurance Khabar and Ship Universe, citing industry sources attributed to Reuters; they are not independently confirmed official market statistics.

A percentage of vessel value can represent a substantial premium. Insurance Khabar reported an illustrative estimate of about $3 million for seven-day cover for a large tanker calling at Yanbu. It also reported about $7 million for cover from southern Saudi ports or on a Hormuz voyage, and said the cost had been at least $100,000 before the current conflict. These are approximate examples from that report, not rate-card prices or amounts that apply to every vessel.

How the reported quotations compare by exposure

Exposure described in reporting Reported quotation Context
Saudi-linked tanker call at Yanbu About 3%; below 1% in early July 2026 September 2026 figures relayed by Insurance Khabar and Ship Universe.
Southern Saudi ports, including Jizan Up to about 7% September reporting; Jizan is described as about 50 miles from Yemen’s border.
Voyage through the Strait of Hormuz About 6–9% Range quoted in September reporting.
Red Sea transit without a Saudi connection About 0.2–0.3% Ship Universe’s indicative comparison; premiums are subject to private negotiation.

The contrast shows why “Red Sea insurance” is too broad a label for one rate: reported exposure differs by port, route and connection to Saudi Arabia. The figures are not necessarily like-for-like policies or offers, and the reporting does not establish that every vessel on a given route would receive the same quote.

Why a Saudi connection can matter

The late-September comparison distinguishes a Saudi-linked call at Yanbu from Red Sea transit without a Saudi connection, for which Ship Universe reported roughly 0.2–0.3%. This does not establish that Saudi affiliation alone sets the price. The source says insurers may consider a vessel’s flag, owner and operator, prior port calls, cargo origin, route, insured value and security profile. A quote is therefore tied to a particular vessel and voyage, rather than simply to the sea it crosses.

What the reports say about the security backdrop

Insurance Khabar’s September 28 account linked higher pricing to the London marine insurance market’s high-risk designation for waters near Bab el-Mandeb after Houthi attacks. It also reported that a drone strike earlier in September shut the East-West pipeline, which had supported Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea route as an alternative to Hormuz, and said the United States was not providing comparable military air coverage for Red Sea shipping. These are contextual details in that report, not a quantified explanation of how much any one factor contributed to the premium rise.

Insurance cost is only one route decision

Operators weigh cover alongside crew safety, voyage time and other operating considerations. A July 25, 2026 SeaNews Türkiye report described the TORM Innovation, after loading naphtha at Yanbu, diverting toward Asia via Gibraltar and the Cape of Good Hope instead of Bab el-Mandeb. The report said the route could add about 30 days and attributed the choice to crew safety. It is a dated example of a possible tradeoff, not evidence of a current or universal routing decision.

Who pays the war-risk expense?

The insurance quote does not by itself answer who ultimately bears the cost. That depends on the parties’ freight and charter arrangements: the relevant contract determines how war-risk premiums and related expenses are allocated. For a particular voyage, the operator, charterer and other counterparties need to check the agreed terms rather than assume the insurer’s quote automatically falls on one party. A July SeaNews report framed the practical question as whether a route “can it be crossed or not?” and who bears the expense; the available reporting does not establish a single allocation that applies to all contracts.

What ship operators and counterparties should verify

  • Ask for a voyage-specific quotation and confirm the covered period, insured value, ports and route.
  • Check which vessel and voyage characteristics the underwriter used, including prior calls, cargo origin and security profile.
  • Review the freight or charter contract to establish who bears war-risk premiums and associated costs.
  • Treat published percentages and dollar examples as reported market indications, not a substitute for a negotiated offer and its policy terms.

Premiums, route conditions and coverage terms are volatile. The cited accounts report conditions in July and September 2026; they do not establish that those conditions remain unchanged.
