The S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 all advanced. That closing result is distinct from the premarket snapshot implied by the original headline: the available account does not establish exact futures prices or the full intraday path for oil.
How the major indexes closed on October 2
The Associated Press reported gains across all four major U.S. indexes at the close:
| Index | October 2 close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,722.72 | Up 56.27 points (0.7%) |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,176.96 | Up 250.40 points (0.5%) |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,190.86 | Up 319.27 points (1.2%) |
| Russell 2000 | 2,832.90 | Up 26.27 points (0.9%) |
The Nasdaq reached a record high, according to the indexed summary of the Investor’s Business Daily article. Friday’s rally did not mean the entire week was positive: that summary characterized the week as mixed.
Why stocks rose as hiring slowed
The AP connected the advance to the September jobs report, which showed employers had slowed hiring. A cooler hiring pace eased concern that an overheated economy could intensify inflation and keep pressure on interest rates. The available reporting does not establish exact payroll, unemployment, wage or revision figures, so those numbers are not included here.

#1 Best Overall
Treasury yields initially fell sharply after the report, then recovered much of their early decline. Oil likewise recovered much of its earlier drop, according to AP. Those reversals matter: the day’s closing context was less one-directional than the initial market reaction.
Which companies moved and what is known about why
| Company | Reported move | Reported context |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla | Shares rose 4.7%. | AP said Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries for its latest quarter, more than analysts expected. |
| Nike | Shares fell 3.6%. | The AP recap reported the decline; the available account does not establish a specific catalyst. |
| Seagate Technology | Double-digit decline. | Yahoo Finance reported the drop but the available account does not establish its stock-specific cause. |
| Western Digital | Double-digit decline. | Yahoo Finance reported the drop but the available account does not establish its stock-specific cause. |
These are individual-company moves, not explanations for the broader index rally. In particular, the reported declines in Seagate and Western Digital should not be assigned a cause without stronger evidence.

What the oil headline does—and does not—establish
The original headline framed oil as tumbling, but that wording describes an earlier market snapshot rather than a verified closing move. AP said oil recovered much of its early decline. Yahoo Finance described oil prices as mixed after G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel stockpiles. The available reporting does not establish the precise intraday price sequence or prove that the stockpile decision caused a particular oil move.

Futures are an indication of where contracts are trading before the regular stock-market session; they are not the same as the indexes’ closing levels. The indexed IBD summary supports a premarket framing and a bullish Friday finish, but does not provide verified futures quotes. For the confirmed result of October 2, use the closing index figures above rather than treating the headline’s futures language as the final outcome.
