Eating Yogurt Every Day After 60? What Nutrition Research Says

Eating yogurt every day after 60 can be a convenient way to include a food that provides calcium and protein, but research does not show that a daily serving produces a specific health benefit for everyone. Yogurt can fit into a varied eating pattern; it is not a treatment or a universal prescription. The useful questions are what a particular product provides, how it fits your overall diet, and whether it suits your needs.

What does the evidence say about eating yogurt every day after 60?

A review titled “Yogurt: role in healthy and active aging” describes yogurt as a source of nutrients including calcium, zinc, B vitamins and protein, as well as probiotics. It also notes that some products are fortified with vitamin D or additional probiotics, so yogurt’s nutrient content varies.

The review, published in May 2014, said that research specifically about yogurt’s nutritional and health attributes in older adults was limited and that most of the studies available to its authors were observational. Observational findings can show an association, but they cannot establish that yogurt caused an outcome. That evidence does not support claiming that daily yogurt prevents fractures, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline or other conditions.

In short, yogurt can contribute useful nutrients, but the evidence cited here does not establish a special benefit from eating it every day after 60. Nor does it establish a best yogurt style, brand or number of servings.

How does yogurt fit into calcium needs?

Calcium recommendations are targets for the whole diet, not amounts to get from yogurt alone. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists these daily recommended amounts:

Group Calcium per day
Women ages 51–70 1,200 mg
Men ages 51–70 1,000 mg
Adults age 71 and older 1,200 mg

These figures come from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements’ consumer calcium fact sheet. It identifies milk, yogurt and cheese as main calcium sources for most people in the United States. How much calcium a yogurt provides depends on the product and serving size, so check its label rather than assuming every container contributes the same amount.

Does yogurt count as a dairy serving?

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) counts one cup of yogurt as one dairy cup-equivalent. NIA describes dairy as a source of calcium, potassium and vitamin D, and suggests low-fat or fat-free dairy choices for heart health. Its food-group guidance for older adults also includes fortified soy milk and yogurt in the dairy group when fortified with calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D.

That category guidance does not mean that every plant-based alternative has the same nutrients as dairy yogurt. Compare the specific product’s label, including its fortification, rather than relying on the word “yogurt.”

Can yogurt help older adults get protein?

Yogurt may contribute protein, but amounts differ by product and serving. NIA’s meal-planning advice for older adults suggests including foods such as dairy or fortified soy products alongside beans, peas and lentils to help get enough protein throughout the day and maintain muscle. This is guidance about an overall eating pattern; it does not show that yogurt by itself prevents age-related muscle loss.

How to compare yogurt labels

NIA advises older adults to choose a variety of foods and favor options with little to no added sugar, saturated fats and sodium. When comparing products, start with the serving size: nutrient figures only make sense when you know how much they refer to. A plain yogurt can be a useful comparison point, but no single style is established as best for everyone.

  • Added sugar: Compare the amount per serving, especially if choosing flavored products.
  • Protein and calcium: Check the amounts for the serving you expect to eat; they vary between products.
  • Vitamin D: Look for whether the product is fortified rather than assuming it contains added vitamin D.
  • Fat: Compare fat content with your preferences and dietary needs. NIA suggests low-fat or fat-free dairy choices for heart health.
  • Product type: For a dairy alternative, check whether it is fortified and what nutrients its label lists.

The NIA meal-planning page recommends variety and choices with little to no added sugar, saturated fats and sodium. The current Dietary Guidelines page identifies the 2025–2030 edition and prioritizes nutrient-dense foods, including protein and dairy, alongside vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and whole grains. These are broad food-pattern recommendations, not a direction to eat yogurt every day.

When should you get individualized advice?

The guidance above does not resolve what is appropriate for someone with a milk allergy, lactose intolerance, kidney disease or medication-related concerns. If one of those applies, ask a clinician or dietitian familiar with your health and dietary needs before treating yogurt—or a substitute—as a routine source of nutrients.
