Abdi Nur Salah, a former policy aide to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, was sentenced on October 1, 2026, to 33 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release for wire fraud. Prosecutors said he received approximately $1.66 million through the Feeding Our Future scheme. That amount is distinct from the more than $10 million in reimbursements reported for meal sites operated through Stigma-Free International.

What sentence did Abdi Nur Salah receive?

FOX 9 reported that the federal court sentenced Salah to 33 months in prison and two years of supervised release on October 1, 2026. He had pleaded guilty to wire fraud on January 28, 2025, after being indicted on September 13, 2022. FOX 9’s account cites court documents and Department of Justice information; it is not the full sentencing judgment or a defendant-specific DOJ sentencing release. Read FOX 9’s October 1, 2026 report.

How much money was attributed to Salah?

Prosecutors said Salah received approximately $1,660,000 in Federal Child Nutrition Program funds, according to court documents summarized by FOX 9. That is the amount reported as his proceeds, not the total paid to the Stigma-Free International sites.

How Stigma-Free International fit into the scheme

According to FOX 9’s account of court documents, Salah acquired Stigma-Free International after Minnesota’s Department of Education announced it would stop approving meal sites run by restaurants and other for-profit companies. He later transferred ownership to co-conspirators, who used the nonprofit to open Federal Child Nutrition Program meal sites in Willmar, Mankato, St. Cloud, Waite Park and St. Paul.

Prosecutors said the co-conspirators claimed nearly five million meals at Stigma-Free sites between November 2020 and November 2021. The sites received more than $10 million in reimbursements based on those claims. Those site-wide payments should not be confused with the approximately $1.66 million reported as received by Salah.

What court documents reportedly say about the money

FOX 9 reported that Salah created and used multiple shell companies to receive and launder his share, and used funds to purchase homes, other real estate and businesses. These details are attributed to court documents as summarized by the station.

What Salah’s attorney said about the sentence

Defense attorney Brian Toder said he was surprised by the prison term because the plea agreement treated Salah as a minimal participant. Toder also said the judge emphasized Salah’s government employment. A plea agreement reflects the parties’ agreement; as Toder noted, it does not bind the judge to impose a particular sentence. FOX 9’s report does not provide a direct statement from the judge explaining the sentence.

How this sentence fits the broader Feeding Our Future case

The federal case against Feeding Our Future participants includes many defendants, and scheme-wide totals are separate from Salah’s individual case. In a March 20, 2026 announcement, the Department of Justice said five more defendants had pleaded guilty and reported 63 convictions in the broader scheme at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a verified total as of Salah’s October 2026 sentencing. DOJ’s March 20, 2026 announcement gives the date and context for that figure.
