Usually, no: you do not need to carry your Social Security card. The Social Security Administration (SSA) says the card is not an identification document and recommends keeping it in a safe place at home. If you need a replacement, SSA provides it free; a paid replacement service is not required.
What a Social Security card does—and what it does not do
Your card shows the Social Security number (SSN) assigned to you. It is not proof of identity: SSA’s March 2023 guidance states, “A Social Security card is not an identification document.” In many situations, people need to provide their SSN, not show the physical card. SSA says the card is unnecessary for most business needs.
For an employer, government agency, or other organization asking for proof of your SSN, check what records it accepts. Requirements depend on the specific task and organization; do not assume that every requester will accept the same alternative.
Why SSA says to keep the card at home
Carrying the card creates another opportunity for it to be lost or stolen. SSA advises storing it safely at home and sharing the number only when required. Jeffrey Buckner, Associate Commissioner for SSA’s Office of Strategic and Digital Communications, put it this way: “The best way to ‘Guard Your Card’ is to keep it in a safe place and share it only when required.”

Before taking the card somewhere, ask whether the organization needs the physical card or only your SSN, and whether another record will meet its requirements. Find SSA’s guidance at Social Security card: Keep it safe.
How to replace a lost or damaged card
SSA says new and replacement Social Security cards are free. In most areas, eligible applicants can request a replacement through a personal my Social Security account. Whether you can complete the request online depends on SSA’s eligibility rules and identity-verification requirements. Current rules and next steps are on SSA’s replacement card page.

- Check your situation. Use SSA’s replacement-card page to see whether your request can be made online. A request involving a name change or a change to your records may require a different process.
- Use the official account route if eligible. Sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account through SSA’s official site. Complete identity verification and follow the instructions shown for your request.
- Follow SSA’s instructions if online replacement is unavailable. SSA may require identity documents or in-person assistance, depending on your circumstances. Consult its current instructions for the documents and submission method that apply to you rather than relying on a general checklist.

How to recognize replacement-card scams
Because SSA replacement cards are free, you do not need to pay a private website or service to obtain one. SSA’s Office of the Inspector General warned on March 10, 2026, about websites that charge for a service SSA provides for free and may seek sensitive personal or payment information. Start at SSA.gov, not an advertisement or an unfamiliar site, and be cautious if a service implies that a fee is required to replace your card. Read the SSA OIG scam alert.

What to do if your SSN may have been exposed
Losing a card does not by itself establish that someone has used your SSN. Choose next steps based on whether there is evidence of misuse:
- Exposed, but no confirmed misuse: SSA recommends considering credit checks, a credit freeze, and monitoring for unusual activity.
- Used fraudulently: SSA directs victims to IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
SSA’s guidance on responding to a stolen or exposed Social Security number is at Social Security number and identity theft.
