Cal-Maine Foods reported a $1.26 diluted loss per share and $539.607 million in net sales for its first quarter of fiscal 2027, below the estimate figures cited by Investing.com. Its reported EPS was $0.79 worse than Investing.com’s $0.47 loss-per-share estimate; revenue was about $48.2 million below that outlet’s $587.8 million consensus. Those comparisons depend on the provider: MarketBeat showed different estimates for the same quarter.
What Cal-Maine reported for fiscal Q1 2027
The quarter covered the 13 weeks ended August 29, 2026. Cal-Maine Foods (Nasdaq: CALM) released its results on September 30, 2026. The company reported sharply lower sales and a net loss, compared with a profitable quarter a year earlier.
| Measure | Q1 fiscal 2027 | Q1 fiscal 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $539.607 million | $922.602 million |
| Gross profit | $403,000 | $311.314 million |
| Operating income (loss) | Loss of $82.165 million | not stated in the September 30, 2026 company release figures cited here |
| Net income (loss) attributable to Cal-Maine Foods | Loss of $58.615 million | not stated in the September 30, 2026 company release figures cited here |
| Diluted earnings per share | Loss of $1.26 | $4.12 |
All reported company figures in the table are from Cal-Maine Foods’ September 30, 2026 release. Net sales declined 41.5% year over year. The move from $311.314 million in gross profit to $403,000 helps show how dramatically the quarter’s economics changed, not just its sales volume.
What “missed by $0.79” means
The $0.79 figure is the arithmetic difference between reported diluted EPS of -$1.26 and the -$0.47 analyst estimate cited by Investing.com in its September 30, 2026 earnings report. It is a miss versus that provider’s estimate, not a company-reported figure or a comparison with last year’s $4.12 diluted EPS.
#1 Best Overall
Estimates are not uniform across financial-data services. Investing.com cited revenue consensus of $587.8 million, putting Cal-Maine’s $539.61 million in reported revenue about $48.2 million below that figure. MarketBeat’s earnings page displayed a -$0.77 EPS estimate and a $561.57 million revenue estimate for the same quarter (accessed October 3, 2026). Against those figures, the gaps would be different. Cal-Maine’s release reports the actual results but does not provide analyst consensus.
| Provider and date | EPS estimate | Revenue estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Investing.com, September 30, 2026 | -$0.47 | $587.8 million |
| MarketBeat earnings page, accessed October 3, 2026 | -$0.77 | $561.57 million |
The actual results are from Cal-Maine Foods’ September 30, 2026 release. Investing.com’s comparisons are from its September 30 earnings report; MarketBeat’s alternative figures appear on its earnings page. An earnings “miss” therefore needs its estimate provider named: surprise figures are comparisons against a data service’s consensus, not an official company benchmark.

Why sales and earnings fell
Conventional egg prices were under pressure
Cal-Maine said the conventional shell egg market was abundantly supplied after industry layer-flock repopulation during fiscal 2026. That larger supply, combined with seasonally softer prices in the first quarter, weighed on conventional egg revenue. Conventional shell egg sales fell 59.5% year over year. Average selling price per dozen fell 59.3%, while volume was relatively flat.
The company’s chief executive, Sherman Miller, described the conditions as “an industry supply imbalance,” while saying underlying demand remained healthy. His explanation points to price and supply as the main distinction: the company reported broadly stable conventional volume, but a much lower average price.

Other businesses grew as a share of a smaller sales base
Specialty shell eggs and prepared foods together made up 54.1% of net sales, up from 37.1% a year earlier. Prepared foods alone accounted for 11.7% of sales, versus 7.8% in the prior-year quarter. That shift reflects a more diversified mix, but it did not prevent an overall quarterly loss while conventional egg prices were weak.
Rank #4
- Specialty shell egg sales fell 14.0% year over year.
- Prepared foods sales fell 13.0%. Cal-Maine attributed part of that decline to temporary production reductions related to capacity expansion and network optimization.
Cal-Maine said it expects prepared-food production capacity to increase by more than 60% by the first half of fiscal 2028 compared with fiscal 2026 year-end. That is management’s forward-looking plan, not a guaranteed result. The company’s stated aim is to expand specialty and prepared-food operations while continuing to focus on conventional shell eggs.

Separate the operating comparison from the estimate surprise. The 41.5% sales decline and shift from prior-year profit to current-quarter loss compare Cal-Maine’s reported results year over year. The $0.79 EPS miss and revenue shortfall compare actual results with Investing.com’s estimates. They answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of performance.

- Helpful in various ways
- For the reported quarter: use Cal-Maine’s release for actual sales, profit or loss, EPS and operating explanations.
- For a consensus surprise: identify the estimate provider and date, because services displayed materially different estimates.
- For the business mix: distinguish conventional shell eggs from specialty eggs and prepared foods; the conventional price decline was much steeper than the sales declines in the other named categories.
The results show both the near-term exposure to conventional egg pricing and the company’s effort to broaden its sales mix. The quarter’s larger specialty and prepared-food share is a diversification signal, not evidence by itself that those businesses have offset the earnings impact of the conventional market.
