Etihad Airways said on 30 September 2026 that it would seek legal advice on options to protect its interests after the Premier League published findings against Manchester City. News reports described the airline as considering legal action, but reporting available as of 3 October did not establish that Etihad had filed a claim. The commission proceeding concerned City; Etihad’s response is not a finding that the airline committed wrongdoing.

What Etihad said—and what it has not done publicly

Etihad rejected any implication that it had been involved in improper commercial arrangements and said it had not been contacted or engaged during the commission process. In a statement reproduced by The Guardian on 30 September, the airline said: “At no time did the Premier League reach out to or engage with Etihad in the process associated with the commission’s opinion.”

Etihad also said it would “seek the relevant legal counsel on the options and recourse available to protect its interests.” That signals consideration of possible steps, not a confirmed lawsuit. The available reporting did not establish that the airline had commenced proceedings, and it did not identify a legal claim or its basis.

What the Premier League says the commission found

The Premier League published a redacted account of an independent commission’s core decision on 29 September 2026. The league said the commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to serious financial-rule breaches over nine seasons, from 2009/10 through 2017/18, and of most charges relating to non-cooperation. Its account says the commission found arrangements with commercial partners and other agreements inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million over the affected period. These are the league’s descriptions of findings concerning City, not separate findings against Etihad.

The league said the commission hearing lasted 42 days and concluded in December 2024. Its published account was redacted; the league said confidentiality rules limited disclosure of further details. Etihad was not named in the published report, according to The Guardian’s coverage of the airline’s response.

Three separate tracks to keep distinct

Commission decision The Premier League says the independent commission found breaches by Manchester City. The league published a redacted core decision. It said the sanction would be addressed separately.
Etihad’s response Etihad rejected implications of improper arrangements, said it had not been engaged in the process, and said it would seek legal counsel. Reporting did not establish that Etihad had filed a claim.
Manchester City’s appeal City challenged the commission’s opinion. AP reported on 1 October that City had filed a comprehensive appeal before the deadline. The outcome remained pending.

Manchester City has appealed; the sanction remains unresolved

City’s appeal is separate from any possible action by Etihad. City said the commission’s opinion “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe,” AP reported on 2 October. The Premier League said City had the right to appeal and that the sanction for the breaches would be considered separately. Neither the appeal result nor a sanction had been announced by 3 October.

AP reported that league regulations provide for an appeal hearing within 12 weeks of City’s filing. That is a reported procedural timetable, not a confirmed hearing date. The league says its appeal board can allow or dismiss an appeal or make another order it considers fit; the process remains subject to confidentiality rules. These process details do not establish that Etihad is a party to City’s appeal or that it has standing to bring a particular claim.

Why Etihad is considering its options

Etihad’s stated concern is the implication it believes the public communication of the findings may create about its role, alongside its assertion that the league did not contact or engage with it during the process. Its statement affirmed its relationship with City while rejecting any implication of improper arrangements. Those are the airline’s positions, not adjudicated conclusions about fairness, legal rights or liability.

The Premier League’s account and Etihad’s response therefore answer different questions: the commission’s decision addressed City’s conduct under league rules, while Etihad has objected to implications about the sponsor and is considering how to protect its interests. As of 3 October, the available reporting did not establish whether Etihad would file proceedings, what legal basis it might rely on, or how any such action would be decided.
