Scott McNeill, Scottish Friendly’s current chief actuary, has been appointed chief financial officer, subject to regulatory approval. He is expected to succeed Alan Rankine, who plans to leave for an opportunity outside the organisation after helping with the transition through early 2027. The appointment comes as Scottish Friendly and OneFamily work toward a proposed merger expected to take effect in early 2027, also subject to approvals.

Who is Scott McNeill, Scottish Friendly’s incoming CFO?

McNeill is Scottish Friendly’s chief actuary. The society has appointed him to lead its finance function as CFO, subject to regulatory approval, and he is expected to become an executive director. No precise start date was reported.

Scottish Friendly chief executive Stephen McGee said McNeill’s appointment reflected the organisation’s succession planning and cited his knowledge of the business alongside actuarial and financial expertise. McNeill said he was delighted to take on the CFO opportunity at an important point in the society’s history. Scottish Financial News reported the appointment and statements on 1 October 2026.

Why is Alan Rankine leaving?

Rankine intends to step down as CFO and take a role outside Scottish Friendly. The report gives no further reason for his departure. He plans to remain until early 2027 to support the proposed merger and an orderly handover.

Rankine joined Scottish Friendly in 2018 as chief actuary and became CFO in 2022, according to the appointment report.

How does the CFO appointment relate to the OneFamily merger?

OneFamily and Scottish Friendly announced a proposed merger on 4 February 2026. The organisations said the combined mutual would serve over 2.3 million members and have almost £10 billion in assets under management. Those figures describe the projected group, not a completed merger or a post-merger tally. OneFamily’s announcement said the combined organisation would use the OneFamily group name, while the Scottish Friendly, OneFamily and Beagle Street brands would continue. It also said the group would maintain bases in Brighton and Glasgow.

McNeill is expected, subject to the necessary approvals, to become CFO of the future merged organisation. That future role is not yet a completed appointment to a merged group: the transaction itself remains proposed.

When is the merger expected to happen?

At the time of the February 2026 announcement, the organisations expected the merger to take effect in early 2027, subject to the necessary approvals. Scottish Friendly’s 2025 results release repeated that expected timing and regulatory condition. Early 2027 is a forecast, not a confirmed completion date, and the cited announcements do not establish that approvals have been granted.
