Miami has been named one of the worst U.S. cities for restaurant reservation no-shows, according to an October 1, 2026, Miami New Times report summarized by The Miami. The accessible summary does not give Miami’s exact rank, the comparison cities, the measured rate, or the study method, so the ranking should be treated as a reported comparison—not a verified citywide no-show rate.

What the report says—and what it does not

The Miami’s October 1, 2026, automated summary of a Miami New Times story by Olee Fowler says Miami is among the worst U.S. cities for people who fail to show up for restaurant reservations. The original Miami New Times page was not accessible, and the summary does not identify the data behind the ranking. It therefore does not establish Miami’s precise position, how cities were selected, how no-shows were counted, or the period covered. Read The Miami’s summary.

That distinction matters: a comparative headline is not the same as a measured estimate for all Miami restaurants. The available account supports saying Miami was named among the worst; it does not support assigning the city a particular percentage or explaining why it ranked there.

Why a reservation no-show matters to a restaurant

A reservation that goes unused can leave a table idle at a time the restaurant might otherwise have seated another party. The effect can be especially consequential when staffing, food preparation, and table availability have been planned around expected guests. The available reporting does not quantify the financial loss for Miami restaurants, so the impact will depend on the venue, service, and whether the table can be filled.

One Miami example illustrates the potential scale without representing the city as a whole. A secondary roundup attributes to OpenTable an account that Phuc Yea could see no-shows reach 50% on a bad night; it also describes one night with 17 no-shows among 70 seats, or 24.3%. These are venue-specific anecdotes, not the methodology behind the city ranking or a typical Miami rate. Brief First’s roundup identifies the example as an OpenTable report from 2020.

Why other no-show statistics do not settle Miami’s rate

Reported figures differ because they describe different populations and measures. The Resos No-Show Index, as summarized by Brief First, covered 3.77 million reservations at 2,417 restaurants from August 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026. It reported a 2.33% overall no-show rate and 3.17% for its U.S. subset; neither figure is Miami-specific.

The same roundup says an OpenTable-commissioned YouGov survey found that 28% of 1,326 U.S. adults said they had failed to show for a reservation in the previous year. The survey was conducted April 19–20, 2021, and measures people’s self-reported behavior nationally—not the share of restaurant bookings in Miami that went unused. The roundup notes that another outlet rendered the survey figure as 30%; the release figure was 28%. OpenTable’s 2021 announcement describes the initiative and survey.

Reservations canceled before service should not be counted as no-shows: a cancellation gives the restaurant notice, while a no-show is a booking whose guests do not arrive and do not cancel in time. Platforms may report these outcomes differently, so figures are only comparable when definitions and time periods match.

What restaurants can do about missed reservations

There is no single policy that fits every restaurant. Operators can weigh the value of preventing an empty table against guest convenience, payment handling, and the risk of discouraging bookings.

  • Send reminders: A text or other reminder can prompt guests to confirm plans or cancel. In the Resos dataset summarized by Brief First, reservations with a delivered SMS reminder had a 16% lower recorded no-show rate. This is an observed association, not proof that reminders caused the difference or a promise of the same result elsewhere.
  • Make cancellation straightforward: A clear, easy-to-use cancellation route gives guests a practical way to release a table if plans change. This also helps distinguish timely cancellations from true no-shows.
  • Use a waitlist: An online or staff-managed waitlist can help fill a table when a reservation is canceled. Its usefulness depends on demand, timing, and the restaurant’s ability to contact waiting guests.
  • Consider a card hold, deposit, or prepayment: These approaches create a financial commitment, but also add friction and require clear terms for guests and staff. The roundup describes comparisons involving deposits or protections as descriptive, not causal evidence that a policy will reduce no-shows by a fixed amount.
  • Choose booking software around actual needs: Reservation and guest-management services may combine reminders, cancellation flows, waitlists, card holds, or deposits. Compare the features and payment terms that matter to the venue rather than assuming a tool will reproduce results from another dataset.

For an operator, a sensible starting point is to track reservations, timely cancellations, and no-shows separately over time. That reveals whether missed bookings are frequent enough to justify a stricter policy, and whether reminders or a waitlist are more appropriate. Providers and policy terms vary, and the available reporting does not establish a universally effective intervention.
