Is Europe releasing diesel reserves? A G7-wide release of oil and fuel products was reported on 2 October, including a substantial early release of diesel. The European Commission has not specified how much Europe—or any individual country—will contribute. The day before, Reuters reported that the Trump administration had pressed France and Germany to draw down emergency diesel stocks or face a possible US export ban. The Commission confirmed high-level contact with Washington, but not the reported ultimatum.
Did Trump threaten a US diesel export ban?
Reuters reported on 1 October that the Trump administration had told France and Germany to release emergency diesel stocks or face a potential US ban on diesel exports. The account cited three people close to the discussions; it was not a publicly confirmed formal US order. Reuters report republished by Euronext Live, 1 October 2026.
That distinction matters: a reported threat is not evidence that a ban was enacted. The European Commission’s midday briefing on 1 October confirmed close contact with member states and ongoing high-level contacts with the US administration. Spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen did not confirm the alleged ultimatum or provide a list of contacts. European Commission briefing transcript, 1 October 2026.
Is Europe releasing diesel reserves?
On 2 October, the Associated Press reported that G7 nations planned to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products in total. The report said a substantial diesel release would be front-loaded within 20 days, with the remainder released over four months. That figure is for the reported G7-wide plan—not 100 million barrels of European diesel. The report does not establish Europe’s share or country-by-country allocations. The European Commission said its Energy Union Task Force discussed diesel-market conditions on 2 October and received a briefing from the International Energy Agency about a collective oil-stock release action launched in March. Its announcement described EU supply as stable “for the time being,” while prices remained high. It does not set out a Europe-specific volume or confirm that individual governments have made final release decisions. European Commission, 2 October 2026.
What is the EU’s diesel supply situation?
The Commission’s 29 September assessment said supply remained stable despite high diesel and jet-fuel prices. It said European refineries were operating near maximum capacity and responding to market signals, while emergency stocks remained high and available in case of disruption. European Commission, 29 September 2026.

On 8 September, the Commission had said there was no immediate EU oil-supply concern: demand for diesel and jet fuel was being met through increased EU refinery production and alternative global supplies, with commercial and emergency stocks described as sufficient. These statements indicate the EU’s reported position at those dates; they do not quantify how a US export restriction or a stock drawdown would affect future supply or prices. Emergency stocks provide a buffer against disruption, while releasing them can add supply to a tight market. The policy choice is therefore a balance between short-term availability and retaining emergency cover. The Commission reported high prices reflecting global market tightness, but the cited statements do not quantify the effect a release would have on prices at the pump. Nor do they establish the potential impact of a US export ban on European supply.
