German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to meet Dutch central-banking veteran Klaas Knot and former Bank of Spain governor Pablo Hernández de Cos, according to Bloomberg reporting republished by The Edge Malaysia on 3 October 2026. The meetings are private discussions reported by unnamed people familiar with the matter—not official nominations or a confirmed shortlist.

What Merz’s reported meetings signal

The Edge Malaysia’s 3 October 2026 report, citing Bloomberg and unnamed people familiar with private deliberations, said Merz was expected to meet Knot in the coming days and Hernández de Cos in the next few weeks. The report described the two men as frontrunners to succeed European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. A German official, France’s finance ministry and Knot declined to comment, the report said; Hernández de Cos was not immediately available.

Those descriptions indicate reported standing in discussions, not a settled choice. The report provides no official shortlist, public appointment decision or comparable policy platforms for the two contenders. It also says Spain’s and the Netherlands’ leaders have endorsed their respective national candidates, while Germany and France are influential participants in negotiations; that is not evidence of an agreed bargain.

Why the succession question is active now

Lagarde remains ECB president. The ECB’s official biography says she has held the post since November 2019. Bloomberg’s report says she would not rule out leaving a few months before her term is scheduled to end in October 2027. That is a reported possibility, not a resignation or confirmation that the succession process has formally begun.

The report also points to two other approaching vacancies in ECB leadership:

  • Isabel Schnabel’s Executive Board position was expected to become free in early January, and governments had been asked to find her successor.
  • Philip Lane’s term as chief economist was reported to end in May.

The report did not specify the year alongside those months, so they should not be read as a fully dated timetable. These vacancy details, like the reported meetings and Lagarde’s possible early departure, come from the account of private deliberations.

Who are the reported contenders?

Reported contender Background given in the report Reported timing or support
Klaas Knot Former head of the Dutch central bank Merz was expected to meet him in the coming days; the report says the Netherlands’ leader endorsed its national candidate.
Pablo Hernández de Cos Former Bank of Spain governor and current general manager of the Bank for International Settlements Merz was expected to meet him in the next few weeks; the report says Spain’s leader endorsed its national candidate.

These are the roles and political signals described in the Bloomberg account, not a like-for-like assessment of the candidates’ policy positions. The report does not establish that either man has been formally nominated.

What the ECB president does—and does not do

The ECB president leads a central bank whose decisions are made through a broader structure. The ECB’s leadership page says the Executive Board manages day-to-day work and prepares decisions for the Governing Council. The Governing Council is the ECB’s highest decision-making body: it sets euro-area policy interest rates and decides how other monetary-policy tools are used. The presidency is influential, but the president does not set rates alone.

What remains unsettled

As of the 3 October 2026 report, it was not established whether either meeting had taken place, whether Lagarde would leave before the reported October 2027 end of her term, or how leaders would handle the leadership vacancies. The report describes political discussions and expectations, not a formal appointment timetable or public selection decision.
