How much did KKR pay for BMC?
BMC’s October 2018 closing announcement did not state a purchase price. Separately, Preqin’s 2018 transaction reporting listed the May sale to KKR at an $8.3 billion exit value. That is a reported transaction value from Preqin, not a price disclosed in BMC’s closing release. Preqin’s 2018 report is the source for that figure.

Who owned BMC before KKR?
Before the acquisition, BMC was held by a private investor group led by Bain Capital Private Equity and Golden Gate Capital. GIC, Insight Venture Partners and Elliott Management were also members of the group identified in BMC’s announcement.
What did BMC do?
In its 2018 announcement, BMC described itself as a systems-software provider founded in 1980, focused on helping enterprises manage and optimize information technology across cloud, hybrid, on-premise and mainframe environments. The release said the company served more than 10,000 customers worldwide, including 92% of the Forbes Global 100. These are figures BMC cited at the time of the announcement, not current customer statistics.

A June 17, 2026 BMC release states that KKR acquired BMC in 2018 and that KKR-managed funds continued to own BMC. The release also describes a separate carve-out transaction: Montagu agreed to acquire a majority stake in BMC Helix, while BMC would retain a minority stake in Helix. It does not describe Montagu as acquiring all of BMC.
