SoftBank acquired British AI-chip designer Graphcore in July 2024. Graphcore became a wholly owned SoftBank subsidiary, but kept its name, Bristol headquarters and core leadership. The companies did not disclose the purchase price.
What happened in the acquisition?
SoftBank announced the acquisition on July 11, 2024. Graphcore continued operating under its own name as a wholly owned subsidiary, with its headquarters in Bristol and offices in Cambridge, London, Gdansk and Hsinchu. The company said it would continue investing in high-skilled jobs. Graphcore’s announcement described the transaction and its plans.
CEO Nigel Toon and co-founder and CTO Simon Knowles remained in leadership roles, and required regulatory approvals had been obtained, according to TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report. Graphcore CEO Nigel Toon called the deal “a tremendous endorsement of our team and their ability to build truly transformative AI technologies at scale, as well as a great outcome for our company.”
Why did SoftBank buy Graphcore?
SoftBank said Graphcore’s chip-design talent was the primary reason for the acquisition. In its investor Q&A, SoftBank described Graphcore as having “exceptional human resources” that fit its AI-chip businesses centered on Arm.

SoftBank’s FY2025 report says the acquisition added deep chip-design expertise and helped build an end-to-end chip-design technology stack around Arm. That makes the deal a strategic investment in people and capabilities as well as in Graphcore’s technology; it does not, by itself, establish that Graphcore’s chips outperform competing products.
What does Graphcore make?
Graphcore develops AI-compute semiconductors and software. Its signature processor architecture is the intelligence processing unit, or IPU, designed for highly parallel machine-learning workloads. Graphcore says its work is aimed at providing efficient, resilient computing power for foundation models, generative-AI applications and scientific discovery.

- High-Performance AI Processing: The MX3 is designed to handle the most demanding AI computer vision workloads, delivering exceptional performance and efficiency.
- Flexible Integration: The MX3 can be easily integrated into your existing systems via its M.2 M-key form factor and support for Linux operating systems.
- Energy Efficient: The MX3 is designed to provide high performance while minimizing power consumption.
- Comprehensive Software Development Kit (SDK): The MX3 is supported by a comprehensive SDK that simplifies development and deployment.
- Hardware compatability: The MX3 is compatible with the PCI-SIG M.2 M-key 2280 Specification. It can be used with the Raspberry Pi 5 with a M-key 2280 HAT.
An IPU is an AI-focused processor architecture distinct from a conventional GPU. Graphcore’s announcement frames the technology as a way to advance demanding AI workloads, but architecture alone does not determine how a product performs in practice. Software support, workload fit, manufacturing capacity, financing and commercial adoption also matter. TechCrunch noted the capital and scale challenges involved in competing in the AI-accelerator market.
How much did SoftBank pay?
The purchase price was not disclosed by SoftBank or Graphcore. The often-repeated $500 million figure is not a confirmed deal value: TechCrunch reported that Toon disputed that figure and declined to disclose the agreed amount. Any specific price estimate should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as the consideration SoftBank paid.

Graphcore is not independently owned: it is a wholly owned SoftBank subsidiary. It has nevertheless retained its name, Bristol base and existing leadership, so the acquisition did not mean the Graphcore identity disappeared. The public announcement does not establish that Graphcore operates independently of SoftBank in every business or strategic decision.
Does Graphcore compete with Nvidia?
Graphcore and Nvidia both operate in the AI-computing market, but the acquisition does not prove that their products are interchangeable or that one is technically superior. Graphcore’s IPU differs from a conventional GPU architecture. A meaningful comparison also depends on software ecosystems, workload fit, manufacturing and financing scale, commercial traction, and—in Graphcore’s case—the company’s integration with SoftBank and Arm. The available deal statements do not provide benchmark results or enough product-level evidence to rank the companies.

What does the deal mean for Arm and AI chips?
SoftBank presented Graphcore’s chip-design expertise as a way to strengthen its Arm-centered AI-chip position and build a broader design-technology stack. Graphcore contributes AI-compute and chip-design capabilities; SoftBank’s stated strategic rationale is that those resources complement businesses centered on Arm. That signals an ambition to deepen SoftBank’s role in AI chips, not a guarantee of a particular product, market share or commercial outcome.
