GitHub Copilot Enterprise became generally available on February 27, 2024, after a limited public beta. At launch, GitHub priced the software subscription at $39 per user per month and positioned it as Copilot for organizations seeking AI assistance grounded in their private code, internal documentation and GitHub workflows.

When did GitHub Copilot Enterprise launch?

GitHub announced general availability on February 27, 2024. The date marks the end of the product’s limited public beta and its availability as a generally available offering. GitHub’s launch announcement described it as “our most advanced AI offering to date.”

What is GitHub Copilot Enterprise?

Copilot Enterprise is a software subscription for organizations using GitHub Enterprise Cloud. It extends Copilot beyond an assistant focused mainly on coding environments: developers can also use Copilot Chat on GitHub.com with organizational code and documentation as context, and access assistance in GitHub workflow surfaces such as pull requests.

How much did Copilot Enterprise cost at launch?

GitHub set the February 2024 launch price at $39 per user per month. This is the historical launch price, not a statement of what a customer will pay today. GitHub’s 2023 preview had also announced $39 per user per month for Enterprise, compared with $19 per user per month for Copilot Business; organizations considering a subscription should verify current pricing and terms with GitHub.

What did Enterprise add over Copilot Business?

The distinction GitHub emphasized was organizational context and broader integration, rather than simply a different editor assistant. The following comparison reflects the plans as described in the 2023 preview and February 2024 launch materials; it is not a current plan or feature guarantee.

Area Copilot Business Copilot Enterprise at launch
Context Standard Copilot assistance. Organization codebase indexing and grounding for code-related conversations.
Where it worked Primarily coding environments. Coding environments plus GitHub.com chat and workflow features.
Administration Business-plan administration. Enterprise owners could manage enablement, seats and policy settings in GitHub Enterprise Cloud.
Announced price $19 per user per month in the 2023 preview materials. $39 per user per month in the 2023 preview and 2024 launch materials.

Can Copilot Enterprise understand a company’s private code?

That was a central launch feature. Copilot Chat on GitHub.com could use an organization’s codebase to help developers navigate and understand unfamiliar code. GitHub also described codebase indexing and deeper organization customization as part of its Enterprise offering. The practical benefit depends on the organization’s setup and the relevant access and policy controls; the launch description is not a guarantee that every answer will be complete or correct.

Can Copilot Enterprise use internal documentation?

GitHub said teams could attach knowledge bases or docsets so Copilot conversations could draw on Markdown documentation stored on GitHub. This gives teams a way to bring internal guidance into interactions, alongside codebase context, rather than relying only on general coding assistance.

Does Copilot Enterprise summarize pull requests?

Yes. GitHub highlighted generated pull-request summaries and the ability to chat about changes. These features were intended to help reviewers get oriented to a proposed change; GitHub’s launch materials did not publish an independent productivity statistic establishing how much review time they save.

What should an organization check before budgeting for it?

  • Seat count: At the announced launch price, the subscription was billed per user per month, so the number of assigned seats affected the recurring software cost.
  • Plan and environment: The intended deployment context was GitHub Enterprise Cloud, with enterprise owners managing enablement, seats and policy settings.
  • Current terms: The $39 figure is the February 2024 launch price. Current prices, plan packaging and allowances may differ; verify them with GitHub rather than applying today’s terms retroactively to the launch.
  • Expected value: The launch materials described capabilities and intended workflow benefits, but did not establish a launch-specific independent productivity result.
