How Micron’s statement changed over time
Micron’s wording became firmer as customer commitments and pricing visibility developed. The periods in these statements are calendar years, even though Micron also discussed revenue by fiscal year.

The progression matters: “most allocated” is not the same wording as “sold out.” Micron’s later statements described firmer commitments and pricing visibility. The statements do not provide a unit-by-unit breakdown of supply or identify individual customers.
What “sold out” means—and what it does not
In this context, “sold out” means Micron had committed or allocated its available HBM production for the stated period to customers. It does not mean that every HBM chip made by every supplier had disappeared from the market. Nor does it mean that consumers could not buy ordinary DRAM modules: HBM is a different product and sales channel.

HBM is a high-bandwidth memory component used in accelerator platforms and other demanding data-center systems. It is not a standard DIMM that a person installs in a desktop PC. As a result, a commitment of Micron’s HBM output does not directly establish whether a particular AI accelerator, server, or consumer product will be available. That depends on the broader supply chain and the product maker’s own plans.
Which HBM products were part of the story?
Micron’s 2024 Form 10-K describes HBM alongside DDR5, low-power DRAM and GDDR in the company’s Compute and Networking Business Unit portfolio. It also links growing memory needs to cloud servers handling AI and other data-centric workloads.

How to read Micron’s revenue guidance and the HBM market estimate
Micron’s HBM revenue outlook and its estimate of the HBM market measure different things. The fiscal-year revenue guidance concerns Micron’s own expected HBM sales; the greater-than-$35-billion estimate concerns the total addressable market for HBM in calendar 2025. The market estimate should not be read as Micron’s forecast revenue or as revenue already earned.

The company’s 2024 Form 10-K reports $17.60 billion in total DRAM revenue and $9.51 billion in CNBU revenue for 2024. Those are broader business figures, not HBM-only revenue. Micron’s separate HBM guidance was several hundred million dollars for fiscal 2024 and multiple billions for fiscal 2025; it was guidance, not a reported result in the statements summarized here. For AI and data-center customers, a sold-out production schedule indicates that Micron’s near-term HBM output had already been committed. That can make access to Micron supply dependent on customer agreements and the wider accelerator and server supply chain. It does not, by itself, show that a specific GPU or server will be delayed, establish how much HBM another supplier can provide, or predict retail prices for finished products.

For individual PC buyers, these announcements are not evidence of a shortage of consumer RAM. HBM and the DDR memory typically bought as PC modules are distinct products. Substituting a consumer DDR5 module or a gaming graphics card for a data-center HBM component would not address the same procurement need.
