Intel’s Ohio One Fab: Location, Investment, Jobs and Delayed Timeline

Intel is building its Ohio One semiconductor campus in Licking County near New Albany and Columbus. The plan calls for two leading-edge fabs, but the original 2025 production target has slipped: a January 2026 report put production no earlier than 2030–2031. Intel first announced an investment of more than $20 billion in 2022; its later U.S. manufacturing overview describes Ohio investment of more than $28 billion.

Where is Intel building its Ohio chip factory?

The project, called Ohio One and also known as the Silicon Heartland project, is at an Intel site in Licking County near New Albany, northeast of Columbus. Intel announced the location on January 21, 2022. The campus plan starts with two fabs and leaves room for as many as eight over time.

Intel described the initial two-fab plan as a way to expand leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, strengthen the domestic supply chain, and serve Intel Foundry customers. The Ohio campus is one part of the company’s broader U.S. manufacturing strategy.

When will Intel Ohio One be operational?

Original target

In its 2022 announcement, Intel projected that construction would begin in late 2022 and production would start in 2025. The company broke ground in September 2022, but 2025 is no longer the current production expectation.

Latest reported timing

A January 19, 2026 report by Tom’s Hardware said the project remained active after delays, with production expected no earlier than 2030–2031. It described the first phase as Modules 1 and 2, together covering about 2.5 million square feet. That is a reported schedule, not a guarantee of the eventual start date.

Intel’s project announcement describes the fabs as leading-edge, but the available project information does not establish a settled first-production process node. A specific node should not be inferred from the project’s general description.

How much is Intel investing in Ohio?

The investment figures refer to different project stages and scopes, rather than a simple reversal:

Figure What it describes Source and timing
More than $20 billion Initial Ohio investment announced for the project Intel, January 2022 announcement
More than $28 billion Intel’s later stated investment in Ohio Intel’s current U.S. semiconductor-manufacturing overview
Up to $100 billion Potential investment if the campus reaches full buildout Intel’s 2022 announcement; a potential long-term figure, not the announced initial outlay

The campus is planned to accommodate up to eight fabs, which is the context for the full-buildout figure. It should not be read as money already committed or spent.

Intel says its broader U.S. investment is supported by up to $7.86 billion in CHIPS Act funding. That is a figure for the wider U.S. effort, not a stated Ohio-only grant amount.

How many jobs could the project create?

Intel’s job estimates have also been presented at different scopes:

  • 3,000 Intel jobs and 7,000 construction jobs: estimates in Intel’s 2022 Ohio announcement.
  • More than 20,000 manufacturing, construction and indirect jobs: Intel’s later U.S. manufacturing overview gives this broader total. It includes indirect effects, so it is not a count of Intel employees alone.

Intel’s current overview also estimates the project will add $2.8 billion to Ohio’s annual GDP. This is the company’s projection of an economic impact, not a guaranteed annual payment to state or local government or to residents.

What is the Silicon Heartland project expected to support?

Domestic manufacturing and suppliers

Intel says Ohio One is intended to expand U.S. capacity for leading-edge chips and strengthen the semiconductor supply chain. Intel identified Air Products, Applied Materials, LAM Research and Ultra Clean Technology as companies that indicated plans to establish a physical presence in the region. They are industrial suppliers or potential business partners, not consumer products being offered by the project.

Education and workforce training

Intel pledged approximately $100 million over a decade for partnerships with Ohio universities, community colleges and the National Science Foundation. The stated focus includes semiconductor curricula, research and development of a talent pipeline for the industry.

Intel’s stated rationale

When announcing the investment, CEO Pat Gelsinger said: “Today’s investment marks another significant way Intel is leading the effort to restore U.S. semiconductor manufacturing leadership.” That is Intel’s rationale for the project; the eventual production date, realized job totals and economic effects depend on execution over time.
