Yes. Intel Itanium is formally end-of-life: Intel’s history records its retirement announcement in 2019, and Intel issued a product-discontinuance notice for selected Itanium processors. For organizations still running Itanium-based systems, the more immediate deadline is HPE’s: standard support for HP-UX 11i v3 and Integrity i4/i6 servers ended on December 31, 2025. HPE plans a narrower mature-software-support period for HP-UX 11i v3 through at least December 31, 2028, without new fixes or security updates.
What happened to Intel Itanium?
Itanium was a joint Intel–Hewlett-Packard IA-64 project introduced for enterprise and high-performance computing. Intel and HP unveiled the processor in May 2001. Intel described IA-64 as its first major departure from x86 architecture in nearly 20 years. Intel’s historical timeline records the retirement announcement in 2019, after nearly 20 years of production, and Intel’s PCN 116733-00 identifies selected Itanium processors and the Scalable Memory Buffer in a product-discontinuance/end-of-life action.
“Itanic” is a colloquial nickname used in the title, not an official technical term. The authoritative records establish the architecture’s launch, retirement, and end-of-life status; they do not establish an official origin for the nickname.
Itanium and HP-UX support timeline
| Date | Milestone | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| May 2001 | Intel and Hewlett-Packard unveil their jointly designed IA-64 processor. | Start of the Itanium architecture’s commercial era. |
| 2011 | Oracle decides to stop new Itanium software development, prompting litigation. | Software-vendor support became a separate issue from Intel’s and HPE’s hardware timelines. |
| 2019 | Intel’s history records its retirement announcement after nearly 20 years of production. | Intel later identifies selected Itanium products in a formal product-discontinuance/end-of-life notice. |
| December 31, 2025 | HPE standard support and sustaining engineering end for HP-UX 11i v3 and HPE Integrity i4/i6 servers. | Standard support has ended; owners need to establish what narrower support, if any, applies to their systems. |
| Through at least December 31, 2028 | HPE plans mature software support for HP-UX 11i v3. | This provides access to existing fixes and updates, not new fixes or security updates. |
Can you still buy an Itanium processor?
Intel’s end-of-life status does not establish that every processor has disappeared from the market. Replacement parts may be offered through specialist or legacy-component channels, but current stock, price, condition, and warranty are not established by Intel’s discontinuance notice. Treat a listing such as an Intel Itanium 9700 as a possible replacement or preservation part—not as proof of ongoing production or broad retail availability.

Before buying, confirm the exact processor model, socket and server compatibility, the seller’s condition and authenticity claims, and what warranty or return terms apply. Intel’s legacy-support page names CNE Direct, Converge, OEMXS, Rochester Electronics, and Smith as distributors for mature semiconductor products; that is not a guarantee that a particular Itanium part is currently in stock.
What does HPE support after 2025 actually cover?
HPE’s announced end of standard support is specific to HP-UX 11i v3 and Integrity i4/i6 servers on December 31, 2025. Its planned mature-support period for HP-UX 11i v3 extends through at least December 31, 2028. Mature support is not equivalent to standard support: HPE says it provides access to existing fixes and updates, but does not include new fixes or security updates. Confirm the support entitlement and scope for the exact system and software contract rather than assuming every Integrity model, HP-UX release, or application receives the same coverage.

- 20 cores (8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores) and 28 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included

- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
That distinction matters for security and compliance planning. Access to previously released patches is not a promise that newly discovered vulnerabilities will receive fixes after standard support ends. An organization should assess its own policy, regulatory obligations, exposure, and compensating controls with its security and compliance teams.
Why an Itanium server is not a drop-in CPU replacement
Itanium systems are a platform stack, not simply a processor that can be swapped into an ordinary x86 computer. U.S. Supreme Court docket materials describe Itanium servers running HP-UX with an Itanium microprocessor jointly developed by HP and Intel, and explain that software must be ported and tested for the platform. The practical dependency can include the server hardware, HP-UX release, databases, compilers, middleware, and applications certified for that environment.

The Oracle dispute is one illustration of why hardware and software support need separate checks. HP’s 2012 statement reports the court’s finding that the settlement agreement required Oracle to continue offering its product suite on HP’s Itanium-based servers until HP discontinued sales of those servers. That history does not establish current support for any particular Oracle version or deployment; verify the vendor’s current position for the actual software stack.

For a finance or IT decision-maker, the choice is a comparison of the cost and risk of maintaining a legacy service against the cost and risk of moving it. The right answer depends on the system’s business role and the support and compatibility facts for that specific installation.

Inventory the service and its dependencies
- Record each Integrity server model, processor, memory configuration, HP-UX version, and support entitlement.
- List the business applications, databases, compilers, middleware, interfaces, and batch jobs that depend on the system.
- For each critical application, identify the vendor-certified versions and whether the needed versions are supported on a target platform.
- Map data flows and operational dependencies so a migration plan includes integrations, backups, recovery procedures, and downstream users.
Price the preservation case
Estimate the full cost of keeping the current service available, not just the cost of a replacement processor. Include verified spare-part supply, repair capability, ongoing support coverage, the availability of people with the required legacy skills, downtime exposure, and the cost of maintaining security and compliance controls. Spare-part preservation can be a rational bridge when a workload cannot move immediately, but it does not restore standard engineering support or create new security fixes.
Price and test the migration case
Compare rehosting, replacing, or rewriting the application as separate options where relevant. Include application porting and testing, data conversion, licensing, infrastructure, operating costs, planned downtime, rollback capability, and the cost of running old and new environments in parallel. Because software may need platform-specific porting and testing, do not budget a migration as a simple server-to-server copy until compatibility has been confirmed.

Set a decision point
Use a documented decision date tied to application readiness, support coverage, parts and skills availability, and the organization’s risk tolerance. If preserving the service, assign owners to monitor parts, support terms, security exposure, and recovery readiness. If migrating, identify a target platform and test business-critical workflows before scheduling cutover. HPE’s support notice directs customers to discuss migration to current HPE platforms; whether that is suitable depends on application requirements and the organization’s architecture.
Quick Recap
What should an owner do with an HPE Integrity server now?
- Confirm the exact system and contract. Match the server model and HP-UX release to HPE’s published support dates and check whether the organization has a separate applicable support arrangement.
- Establish the application support position. Ask each software vendor about the installed version, current fixes, certification, licensing, and support on the existing platform and any proposed target.
- Assess exposure and continuity. Determine how the absence of new fixes or security updates affects the system, document compensating controls, and test backups and recovery.
- Verify parts and repair options. Check exact part compatibility, provenance, condition, availability, and warranty with a qualified supplier before relying on a spare.
- Compare total costs and approve a path. Put preservation and migration costs, downtime, operational risk, and staffing needs on the same decision record, then assign an owner and timetable.
