Feroot Security announced an $11 million seed round led by True Ventures on February 28, 2022. The company said it would use the funding to accelerate product development and go-to-market initiatives for its browser-based web application security products.

What Feroot Security does

Feroot focused on the client-side layer of websites and web applications: the parts visitors interact with in a browser. That includes forms, marketing trackers and third-party JavaScript. The company argued that organizations often concentrated on server-side defenses while overlooking risks introduced in this browser-facing layer.

Those risks can arise when a script or service integrated into a site is vulnerable or compromised. Feroot co-founder and CTO Vitaliy Lim described how combinations of services and website components can turn scripts that were not initially malicious into a threat. SecurityWeek said Feroot’s tools were designed to address JavaScript threats including cross-site scripting (XSS), formjacking and skimmers.

Feroot’s products: Inspector and PageGuard

Inspector

Feroot described Inspector as a product for JavaScript analysis and monitoring, giving organizations visibility into scripts running in their web applications.

PageGuard

PageGuard added permissions, controls and protection. Feroot positioned the products as a way to monitor browser-side activity and respond to risks affecting forms, trackers and other parts of a digital experience.

Why client-side security matters

Forms can collect personal and financial information, making them an attractive target for attackers seeking to steal data through compromised pages or scripts. Feroot CEO and co-founder Ivan Tsarynny said that 98% of websites use forms to collect personal and financial data from customers. That figure was his statement in the company’s 2022 announcement, not an independently sourced study cited there.

The company’s pitch was that conventional back-end security does not, by itself, provide visibility or control over every script a browser loads. Its products targeted this gap with analysis, monitoring, permissions and protection for the client-side environment.

Who funded Feroot, and why it raised the round

True Ventures led the February 2022 round. Feroot said the funding would help it meet growing customer demand by accelerating product development and go-to-market activity. The founders said they chose True Ventures after receiving offers from multiple venture firms. True Ventures partner Puneet Agarwal said that increasingly distributed interfaces had made security challenges harder to tackle.

Feroot was co-founded by Ivan Tsarynny, its CEO, and Vitaliy Lim, its CTO. In July 2021, the company announced a $2.5 million seed round involving Y Combinator and cybersecurity executives including Jon Oberheide, Kevin Mahaffey, Zane Lackey, Varun Badhwar, Dave Wichers, Jenny Yang, Michael Sutton and Sounil Yu. SecurityWeek reported that the True Ventures-led financing brought Feroot’s total seed funding to more than $11 million.
