Renesas Electronics and GlobalFoundries (GF) announced a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing partnership on February 16, 2026, in GF’s U.S. release and February 17 in Renesas’ Japan release. The deal gives Renesas broader access to GF’s semiconductor processes and manufacturing network, with initial tape-outs targeted for mid-2026. It is an industrial supply agreement, not a product offer for individual buyers.
What did Renesas and GF announce?
The companies expanded their strategic collaboration through a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing partnership. Renesas will gain access to a wider set of GF technologies for chips used in areas including vehicles, power management and industrial connectivity. The announcement describes the arrangement as a way to improve supply flexibility and resilience as demand for semiconductors grows. GF’s announcement and Renesas’ announcement were issued on February 16 and 17, 2026, respectively.
Which technologies and applications are included?
Renesas expects access to GF’s FDX fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI), BCD, and feature-rich CMOS technologies with non-volatile-memory features. The processes are intended for systems-on-chip, power devices and microcontrollers; the companies cite use cases such as:
- Automotive radar for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
- Electric-vehicle battery management.
- Secure industrial Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.
- Electrification, connectivity and AI-related computing.
The releases say initial tape-outs were on track to begin in mid-2026. Tape-out is a design milestone when a chip layout is sent for fabrication; it does not mean that a chip has completed qualification or entered volume production. Where will manufacturing take place?
The collaboration is set to start with manufacturing in the United States, then extend to GF facilities in Germany and Singapore and GF’s manufacturing partnership in China. The companies are also considering porting selected GF processes into Renesas’ own fabs in Japan. That Japan option is under consideration, not a confirmed manufacturing commitment. GF’s announcement outlines the geographic scope.
How could the partnership strengthen chip supply?
Access to more process technologies and manufacturing locations can give Renesas additional options for making chips as customers’ needs and capacity conditions change. The companies frame the agreement around supply assurance for automotive and industrial demand, including electrification and connected systems. GF and Renesas also link the U.S. manufacturing element to efforts to increase domestic semiconductor production for economic and national-security priorities. The announcements do not quantify how much capacity the partnership adds or how it changes supply for any particular customer.

Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata said broader access to GF technologies gives the company “the flexibility and supply assurance our customers need.” GF CEO Tim Breen described the agreement as a strengthened relationship and emphasized GF’s role in essential semiconductor technologies. What commercial details are public?
The companies characterize the arrangement as a multi-billion-dollar partnership, but their cited announcements do not disclose a specific contract value, wafer volumes, pricing, customer allocations or confirmed qualification results. The headline figure should therefore be read as the stated scale of the partnership, not as a detailed breakdown of spending or guaranteed production.
