The exposed information could include payment-card details as well as customers’ names and addresses. If you had an online order during that period, contact your card issuer and follow its advice on reporting charges and replacing or blocking the card.
What happened in the GameStop breach?
GameStop’s June 2, 2017 customer notice said an investigation found that information associated with some online orders may have been obtained by an unauthorized third party. The company identified the potential exposure on April 18, 2017. Government hearing material described the website’s payment processor as the route through which the data was taken.
The notice covered customers who placed or attempted to place orders on GameStop.com—not only customers whose orders were completed. It did not say that every customer in the period was affected, or establish that every potentially exposed record was used for fraud.
Which orders and information were involved?
| Question | What GameStop’s notice says |
|---|---|
| Potentially affected order dates | August 10, 2016 through February 9, 2017 |
| Order activity | Orders placed or attempted on GameStop.com |
| Potentially exposed fields | Name, address, payment-card number, expiration date and security code (CVV) |
| When the company identified potential exposure | April 18, 2017 |
GameStop described the information as data that “may have been obtained,” rather than confirming that every listed field was taken for every customer. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s breach archive also reported card data offered for sale and listed the exposed fields.

Was GameStop hacked, and how many customers were affected?
In practical terms, the incident involved unauthorized access to information associated with GameStop.com orders through the website payment processor. The available primary-source accounts do not establish a verified total number of affected customers or a dollar amount of losses. The absence of a published total is not evidence that no customers were affected.
It is also more accurate to describe the event as a 2017 incident than as a current breach. GameStop’s fiscal-2025 Form 10-K discusses cybersecurity governance and controls and says the company was not aware, as of that filing, of a recent attack that had materially affected it. That disclosure does not establish that no security incidents occurred; it describes what the company reported about material impact in that filing.

What should you do if you had a GameStop.com order during the affected period?
- Contact the card issuer promptly. Tell the issuer you may have had a card used for a GameStop.com order during the affected dates. Ask whether it recommends blocking or replacing the card and how to dispute any unauthorized charge.
- Report unfamiliar transactions. Use the issuer’s fraud-reporting process for charges you do not recognize. Keep a record of the date you contacted the issuer and any instructions it gave you.
- Check statements and account activity. Review card statements for unauthorized transactions, including activity that appears after the order period. Continue checking statements for as long as the issuer recommends.
- Review your credit reports. GameStop’s notice advised customers to review credit reports as well as account statements. Look for unfamiliar accounts or other activity you did not authorize, and follow the reporting instructions provided by the relevant financial institution or credit bureau.
Replacing a card addresses the exposed payment credential; it does not undo a charge already made or itself verify whether other personal information has been misused. The issuer can advise on the appropriate card response, while statement and credit-report checks cover different kinds of warning signs.

GameStop’s Privacy Policy effective July 1, 2026 describes categories of payment and account information the company collects. That current policy is useful context for how the company describes its data practices, but it is not evidence about which information was exposed in 2017. The 2017 incident’s scope should be understood from the customer notice and government records about that event.
