Intel postponed its September 2024 Innovation event until 2025 after disappointing financial results and a tougher-than-expected outlook for the second half of the year. The decision came as the company pursued major cost cuts and dealt with product concerns, including reported problems with some Raptor Lake desktop CPUs. Intel did not say those CPU issues alone caused the postponement.

Why did Intel postpone Innovation 2024?

Intel told attendees that its Intel-hosted Innovation event, scheduled for September 2024, would be postponed until 2025. The company directly cited its financial results and a more challenging outlook for the second half of 2024, saying it needed to align its cost structure and assess how to rebuild a sustainable engine of process-technology leadership. Tom’s Hardware reproduced Intel’s statement.

The timing connected the event decision to Intel’s broader financial and operating pressures, rather than establishing that a single product failure caused it. Intel’s second-quarter 2024 results release described a substantial cost-reduction effort as the company sought to improve efficiency, competitiveness, profitability and its balance sheet.

How were layoffs and cost reductions connected?

Intel announced a plan to save $10 billion in 2025. CEO Pat Gelsinger’s employee message, as reported by Network World, also set a target to reduce headcount by 15%—about 15,000 employees. Those actions formed part of the same difficult financial backdrop as the event postponement, but Intel’s public explanation for postponing Innovation pointed to its results and second-half outlook, not layoffs as a specific cause.

What put pressure on Intel’s second-quarter results?

Intel CFO David Zinsner said second-quarter results were affected by gross-margin headwinds from the accelerated ramp of AI-PC products, higher-than-typical charges related to non-core businesses and the impact of unused capacity. That explanation identifies several sources of pressure; it does not attribute the event decision to any one of them. The remarks appear in Intel’s Q2 2024 release and its accompanying earnings materials.

Did Raptor Lake CPU problems cause the postponement?

Reports of issues affecting some Raptor Lake desktop CPUs were part of the product-problem context around Intel at the time. Network World’s coverage described the financial results and CPU concerns as a combined blow to the company. However, Intel’s cited explanation for postponing Innovation named its financial results and tougher second-half outlook. The available reporting does not establish that Raptor Lake issues were the sole cause, or quantify their contribution to the decision.

What kind of event was Intel Innovation?

Innovation was an Intel-hosted event for analysts, customers and developers to learn about the company’s plans, try its technology and discuss how to use it, according to Tom’s Hardware. It was not simply a large product-launch show: the publication distinguishes it from the former Intel Developer Forum, which was more closely associated with major launches. That purpose helps explain why postponing the gathering was a visible change in Intel’s engagement plans, without making the event itself evidence of a particular product announcement being canceled.
