XBOW’s $20M Seed Round: What the AI Pen-Testing Company Does

XBOW uses AI to automate parts of offensive security. Here’s what the former GitHub engineers’ $20 million seed round, old benchmark results and 2026 Series C tell readers.

XBOW is an AI-powered offensive-security company that aims to automate parts of penetration testing: finding vulnerabilities in web applications and attempting to exploit them. Sequoia Capital led its $20 million seed round, announced in 2023. That figure is now part of a much larger funding story: XBOW announced a $120 million Series C at a valuation above $1 billion on March 18, 2026.

What is XBOW?

XBOW builds software for offensive security, the practice of testing systems by looking for weaknesses an attacker could exploit. The company says its system can autonomously discover and exploit vulnerabilities, while also supporting pentesters, bug hunters and security researchers.

Its founding team includes Oege de Moor, creator of GitHub Copilot and founder of Semmle, as well as former GitHub engineers and security specialists. Nico Waisman, a former Lyft chief information security officer, is among the security leaders associated with the company. SecurityWeek also reported on the team and its financing in July 2024: SecurityWeek’s report on XBOW’s funding and team.

How does AI-powered penetration testing work?

In broad terms, an AI pentesting system attempts to carry out steps that would otherwise require a security analyst: inspect an application, identify a potential weakness, and test whether it can be exploited. XBOW describes its approach as autonomous vulnerability discovery and exploitation, rather than simply producing scanner alerts for a person to investigate.

That distinction matters to security teams. A useful finding needs evidence that helps an analyst understand and reproduce the issue, not just a warning that something might be wrong. The available company descriptions do not establish that XBOW can test every kind of system or replace the judgment required to set scope, authorize testing and assess business risk.

Did former GitHub engineers raise $20 million for XBOW?

Yes. Sequoia Capital led XBOW’s $20 million seed round, announced July 30, 2023. The financing announcement positioned the company as a way to scale offensive security amid a shortage of human specialists and demand for more frequent testing. SecurityWeek later reported the same seed financing in July 2024.

The seed round is no longer a complete picture of XBOW’s financing. On March 18, 2026, the company announced that it had raised $120 million in Series C financing led by DFJ Growth and Northzone, at a valuation above $1 billion. Those are company-announced financing terms; they describe investment and valuation, not a measure of product effectiveness.

What do XBOW’s benchmark results show?

In a July 2024 product announcement, XBOW reported success on 75% of 543 web-security benchmarks, including benchmarks from PortSwigger and PentesterLab. It also reported 85% success across 104 novel benchmarks of its own. These are historical results reported by the company, not a current, universal accuracy rate for real-world penetration tests.

XBOW’s benchmark page now carries an editor’s note saying the 2024 benchmarks are outdated and should no longer be used to measure offensive performance. As a result, the percentages are useful as a snapshot of the company’s earlier evaluation, but they should not be treated as a current score or as evidence that the system will find a particular share of vulnerabilities in any customer’s environment. The company’s original account is in its July 2024 benchmark announcement.

Can XBOW replace human pentesters?

The available information supports a more limited conclusion: XBOW is designed to automate and scale parts of offensive testing, and the company presents it as augmenting pentesters and researchers. It does not establish that human pentesters are no longer needed.

  • Testing cadence: Automation may support more frequent testing than a point-in-time assessment, but the scope and results still need interpretation.
  • Coverage: The cited benchmark claims concern web security. They do not establish equivalent performance for cloud, network, mobile or source-code testing.
  • Evidence and review: Exploit validation can make findings more actionable, but security teams still need to review impact, prioritize remediation and confirm that testing was authorized and safe.
  • Governance: Organizations remain responsible for defining permitted targets, protecting data and deciding when human approval is required, especially in production environments.

How can security teams access or integrate XBOW?

XBOW’s documentation describes Console guidance and a REST API, along with integrations for Jira, Microsoft Sentinel and Security Copilot. These interfaces can fit a professional security workflow, but the existence of an integration does not by itself establish what data is shared, what actions are automated or what controls are available; teams should check the current documentation and deployment terms for those details.

XBOW’s company announcements describe a shift from an early-stage AI security venture to a substantially larger financing-backed operation. For a prospective user, however, the key questions remain practical: what assets the product can test, how findings are evidenced, how safely it operates in the intended environment and how its output fits the organization’s human review process.
