How Component Sense Is Helping Shape a Circular Economy for Electronics

Component Sense focuses on manufacturer-held excess and obsolete components, using inventory tools and redistribution to keep usable parts in circulation before recycling or disposal.

Component Sense works on a specific part of the electronics-waste problem: excess and obsolete (E&O) inventory held by manufacturers. It buys or consigns usable components, matches them to buyers who need them, and keeps them available for manufacturing or repair instead of sending them straight to scrap. That can preserve more of a component’s value than recycling it—but it is not a household-device collection or recycling service.

What a circular economy means for electronic components

A circular approach tries to keep products and materials useful for as long as practical. For electronic components, that means preventing surplus from building up where possible, finding a new use for usable stock, and turning to recycling or disposal only when higher-value options are not viable.

That order matters. Recycling recovers material; redistribution can preserve a component in its original purpose and avoid the need to manufacture a replacement. The potential benefit is strongest when a part is still usable, its identity and condition can be verified, and a real buyer needs it.

How Component Sense moves excess stock back into use

Reduce surplus before it becomes obsolete

Component Sense describes better planning and inventory controls as the first way to reduce E&O stock. Managing inventory earlier can help manufacturers spot components they are unlikely to use before they become harder to sell or match to demand.

Redistribute components that still have a use

The company documents several routes for handling surplus: InPlant inventory management, consignment, outright purchase, bill-of-materials (BOM) matching, and online component sales. Depending on the arrangement, Component Sense can take ownership of stock or sell it on a customer’s behalf. BOM matching helps identify whether available parts correspond to components needed for a buyer’s planned production.

InPlant is an inventory-visibility tool rather than a recycling process. Component Sense says it updates a customer’s excess inventory live and automatically, helping make stock visible sooner so it can be considered for redistribution. Chief Technology Officer Grant Rutherford describes the aim as helping customers “move your stock with minimal fuss.” Better visibility may help stock find a buyer, but it does not itself prove that components were reused or that waste was prevented.

Support repairs when original parts are hard to source

Legacy components can be important when industrial, automotive, or military equipment needs repair and redesign is impractical. Component Sense says it sources older parts for these applications. Reusing a verified legacy part can help keep existing equipment operating; it is not a guarantee that any particular component is compatible, authentic, or appropriate for safety-critical use. Buyers still need suitable traceability, testing, and qualification for their application.

What the figures say—and what they do not

Component Sense’s sustainability article presents the following global e-waste figures. These are figures reported by the company’s page, not measurements of Component Sense’s own activity.

Measure Figure reported Attribution and qualification
E-waste generated 62 million tonnes in 2022 Component Sense sustainability article, 2022
Formally recycled and collected 22% in 2022 Component Sense sustainability article, 2022
Projected e-waste volume 82 million tonnes by 2030 Projection reported on the Component Sense sustainability page

The scale figures give context for why reuse routes matter, but they do not show how much global e-waste Component Sense handles. Nor does the 22% figure establish what happened to the remainder; it refers specifically to what the page describes as formally recycled and collected.

Component Sense’s mission page, accessed in 2026, says more than 62 million components have been saved from landfill. That is a company-reported cumulative claim, not the same measure as tonnes of global e-waste. Other company pages have published different cumulative totals at different times, so those figures should not be combined into one timeless result.

What a customer case study can show

An anonymized telecom customer case study published or crawled in 2026 reports that more than 3.5 million components were redistributed and more than US$1.9 million in revenue was recovered from 2023 through May 2026. The example illustrates two possible business outcomes of E&O redistribution: parts returned to use and money recovered from inventory that might otherwise remain idle.

It is one company-reported case, not an independently verified industry benchmark. The customer is not named, and the figures do not establish how much waste was avoided, the emissions impact, or the results a different business should expect.

How to judge whether redistribution is the right route

For a manufacturer evaluating an E&O program, the circularity claim depends on what happens to the parts after they leave inventory. Useful questions include:

  • Traceability and controls: What documentation, inspection, and counterfeit-prevention measures support the parts’ identity and condition?
  • Actual reuse: Are components sold to a buyer who will use them, or merely transferred into another inventory position?
  • Speed and recovery: How quickly can stock be matched or liquidated, and what value can be recovered under the chosen sale or consignment terms?
  • Inventory visibility: What data does the service update, how often is it refreshed, and how does that information help identify stock for redistribution?
  • Logistics: Where are buyers located, and how do shipping distance and handling affect cost and environmental impact?
  • Legacy sourcing: Can the provider find older parts, and what qualification evidence is available for the intended equipment?
  • Environmental evidence: Are claims based on documented quantities actually reused, or on estimates of landfill avoidance without a stated method?

Redistribution is most convincing as a circular-economy measure when traceable, usable components reach a buyer who needs them. If parts cannot be safely or practically reused, recycling may be the better remaining option; the available company material does not establish that every item of E&O stock can be resold or reused.
