Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo give a Mac app Full Disk Access, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, choose Add, select the app, and click Open. First verify that it is the app you intended to install and that its documented task reasonably needs broad file access. If it only needs a particular folder, check whether the narrower Files & Folders permission is enough.
What Full Disk Access allows
Full Disk Access is broader than permission to open one or two folders. Apple says it can include files used by other apps, such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home; Time Machine backup data; and certain administrative settings for every user on the Mac. See Apple’s description in Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac.
That scope is why this permission should match the app’s actual job rather than be enabled as a routine troubleshooting step. Apple’s settings explain what the control covers, but they do not determine whether a particular third-party app or publisher is trustworthy.
Check whether the app needs broad access
- Confirm the exact app and publisher. Make sure it is the app you meant to install, and consider whether you trust its source. The permission panel itself does not verify an app’s reputation.
- Read the app’s stated reason. Compare the explanation with what the app does and review its privacy information. If the task involves only a specific folder, broad access may not be necessary.
- Consider Files & Folders first. Apple lists this separately as a control for locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. Its scope is narrower than Full Disk Access; see Control access to files and folders on Mac.
Grant Full Disk Access in current macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, then Full Disk Access.
- Choose Add, locate and select the intended app, then click Open.
- Check that the intended app appears in the Full Disk Access list and that its permission is enabled.
Apple’s current settings guide documents this route at Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac.

Remove access when it is no longer needed
Return to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and switch off the app’s permission. Review the list periodically, especially when an app is no longer part of your workflow. Apple documents managing the permission in the same privacy settings guide.
Find the setting on older macOS versions
Apple’s documentation distinguishes the interface by version: macOS 13 or later uses System Settings > Privacy & Security; macOS 12 or earlier uses System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. The interface labels can differ across releases, so follow the labels on the Mac you are using. See Apple’s Controlling app access to files in macOS.
