Applied Materials’ former chief technology officer was Mark Pinto. The company announced in December 2012 that he planned to leave after a transition period as it combined its Energy and Environmental Solutions (EES) and Display businesses under new leadership. The contemporaneous report did not give his final employment date or say that he was fired.
Why was Mark Pinto leaving Applied Materials?
EE Times reported on December 3, 2012, that Pinto intended to leave following a transition period. Applied announced the plan as part of a reorganization that combined its EES and Display units. The report does not characterize Pinto’s departure as a firing or resignation, and it does not provide an exact departure date or financial terms.
Applied said mobility and clean-energy trends made combining the units appropriate for improving efficiency. Chairman and CEO Mike Splinter said the structure could better support customer roadmaps and advance technology for large-area applications. Splinter also praised Pinto and Display leader Tom Edman, saying: “Mark and Tom have made many valuable contributions to Applied Materials and have been great colleagues,” EE Times reported.
Who was Mark Pinto?
Pinto joined Applied Materials in 2004 after five years at Agere Systems. Before that, he spent 16 years at Bell Labs, where he rose to vice president and Fellow. At Applied, his senior roles included chief technology officer, vice president of the company’s China subsidiary, and chairman of its venture-capital arm. At the time of the reorganization, he was executive vice president and general manager of EES.

What happened to Applied’s EES and Display businesses?
The two units were combined under Ali Salehpour, who joined Applied as vice president and general manager of the combined groups. Salehpour had most recently served as a senior vice president at KLA-Tencor, a competitor in semiconductor equipment. Tom Edman, then group vice president and general manager of Display, also planned to leave after a transition period.
Edman had been CEO of Applied Films Corp., which Applied Materials acquired in 2006. EE Times did not report exact exit dates for either executive.

Who replaced Pinto as CTO?
The December 2012 report does not name a successor to Pinto’s CTO role. It describes the leadership arrangement for the combined EES and Display groups, not a separate appointment to the CTO position.

- Company’s stated rationale: Improving efficiency and responding to mobility, clean-energy and large-area technology opportunities.
- Not stated in the report: Final employment dates, severance or other financial terms, a quantified market reaction, and the name of a CTO successor.
Applied Materials’ current newsroom covers areas including advanced packaging, memory, deposition and etch, but those later activities do not change what the 2012 announcement establishes about Pinto’s departure.
