MtekVision spun off its Canadian IC design unit as CogniVue Corp., a company focused on programmable image-cognition processors for embedded vision systems. The move was reported in October 2009; CogniVue says it launched as a separate Canadian corporation on January 1, 2010.

What did MtekVision spin out?

South Korean fabless chip maker MtekVision separated its Canadian integrated-circuit design unit to form CogniVue Corp. A report dated October 13, 2009, described the spinout; CogniVue later identified January 1, 2010, as the date it launched as a separate corporation. Contemporaneous report · CogniVue announcement

What did CogniVue make?

CogniVue specialized in programmable image-cognition processors (ICPs): chips intended to analyze images and video in real time within embedded devices. The aim was to interpret visual information, rather than simply handle conventional multimedia tasks.

Processors and supporting technology

The Canadian unit had developed three generations of Maple multimedia processors: Maple-2, Maple-3, and Maple-3X. Its technology also included an Apex DSP Sub-System for image and video processing. Separately, MtekVision was promoting the MV8762, a 350-MHz Arm9 application processor; the report does not establish that this processor was itself a CogniVue product. Contemporaneous report

The report reproduces a company statement that Apex’s advantage over traditional DSPs was “power and speed.” That is a company claim, not an independently verified benchmark. The cited accounts do not provide a benchmark comparison, power measurement, manufacturing process node, or independent performance test.

Where were image-cognition processors intended to be used?

CogniVue targeted embedded systems that needed to analyze camera footage or other visual input, including automotive smart cameras, IP video surveillance, and mobile devices. In a 2011 announcement, the company said its processors and embedded software toolkits were being used in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and consumer-device gesture recognition. Was the spinout commercially successful?

CogniVue reported a meaningful commercial milestone on July 26, 2011: more than 10 design-ins and over $50 million in sales revenue over three years. These were figures reported by CogniVue, not independently audited results in the cited announcement. A design-in indicates that a supplier’s technology has been selected for a product design; it does not by itself show how many units shipped or how much revenue was recurring. CogniVue announcement

What does MtekVision do now?

MtekVision’s current corporate materials describe work in automotive cameras and driver monitoring, image-recognition semiconductors for AI or machine vision, image signal processors, multimedia application processors, customized ODM research and development, car-driving recorders, and digital tachographs. Its English corporate page says the company has supplied more than 400 million ICs used in mobile and automotive cameras; that is a company-reported total. Can you buy CogniVue processors on Amazon?

The available sources describe chips, intellectual property, software toolkits, and OEM design-ins; they do not identify an Amazon retail listing for CogniVue processors, Maple chips, the MtekVision MV8762, or related development kits. These are enterprise semiconductor products, not ordinary consumer purchases. No directly relevant Amazon product is established by the available information.
