How Should AI Agents Handle Secrets and Credentials?

AI agents should use distinct, least-privilege identities—not store passwords or tokens in model context. Learn how to scope access, deliver secrets safely, and test for misuse.

Give each AI agent a distinct, least-privilege identity, and keep passwords, API keys, session tokens, recovery codes, and other live credentials out of its prompts, memory, and broadly accessible logs. A trusted runtime or connected service should provide only the access needed for a specific task, for the shortest practical time. This matters especially when an agent can reach financial accounts or personal data: storing a credential in a vault is not enough if the agent can retrieve it freely and send it somewhere else.

Why are agent credentials different from ordinary passwords?

An AI agent can interpret instructions, retrieve outside material, call tools, and sometimes hand work to other agents. That makes access control a question of both who is acting and what the agent can do. A password or token placed in a prompt may be exposed to more than the intended operation: it can remain in context, memory, configuration, environment variables, or protocol logs. OWASP’s MCP security guidance specifically warns about these persistence paths.

For personal-finance tasks, the distinction is consequential. An agent that reads a transaction list does not necessarily need authority to move money, change account settings, or add a payee. Treating all connected access as one broad permission turns a limited convenience into a larger account risk.

There is no established prevalence figure in the cited official guidance for how often agent credentials are exposed or shared. The practical case for controls comes from the documented ways agent contexts and tools can be misused, not from a claim that a particular rate of incidents has been measured.

What should an agent be allowed to access?

Give an agent its own identity rather than reusing a person’s general account or credentials. NIST’s 2026 article on agent identity says agents need unique identifiers, credentials, and entitlements bound to the identity of the user or system operating them. A distinct identity makes actions more attributable and limits the accountability gaps created by shared personal credentials.

Scope access as narrowly as the task allows. Consider the agent, tool, resource, action, and session together; separate read access from write access when possible. Require explicit authorization for sensitive actions and make expiry and auditability part of the design. OWASP’s agent guidance calls for giving agents only the tools they need and scoping permissions per tool. NIST discusses delegated authorization and granular scopes.

For delegated enterprise access, NIST discusses mechanisms including OAuth 2.0, SPIFFE, Rich Authorization Requests, Transaction Tokens, and AuthZen. These are relevant mechanisms, not a single settled, universal standard for agent identity; implementations and standards are still developing.

How should an agent receive a secret?

Keep the raw credential outside model-visible content wherever the architecture permits. A trusted runtime, connector, broker, or consuming service can retrieve and use authentication material after the model selects an allowed action or connector. In a consumer-side retrieval pattern, the service that needs the credential obtains it directly, so the orchestrator or pipeline does not also need to handle the secret.

Prefer runtime delivery over putting a long-lived key in a prompt, configuration available to the model, or tool context the agent can freely inspect. OWASP’s MCP guidance recommends runtime secret injection and short-lived, scoped tokens. OWASP’s secrets-management guidance recommends dynamic secrets where feasible, because they reduce credential reuse.

A secrets-management system can help store, scope, rotate, and attribute credentials. OWASP names AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault, Google Secret Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Conjur, and Keeper as examples. The product name does not determine the security of the design: if an agent or tool can retrieve a live credential and send it through an unrestricted channel, storage in a vault alone will not stop misuse.

How do the common credential patterns compare?

Design area Weaker pattern Stronger pattern to evaluate
Identity Reuse a person’s broad credentials Give the agent a distinct identity with delegated, attributable rights
Duration Use a long-lived static token Issue a short-lived or dynamic credential scoped to the task or session
Secret boundary Put the raw secret in a prompt, memory, or broadly exposed tool context Use trusted runtime retrieval or consumer-side access while keeping the raw secret out of model context
Permissions and audit Grant broad access with unclear ownership Limit resource and action scope; define expiry, attribution, rotation, and monitoring

The stronger column describes a design direction, not a guarantee. A component that is allowed to retrieve and use a credential can still be abused if its authorization checks, available tools, or outbound data controls are too broad.

How can prompts, memory, and logs expose secrets?

Treat external material as untrusted, including user messages, retrieved documents, websites, emails, tool responses, and messages from other agents. Instructions embedded in that material can try to redirect an agent into unintended actions. NIST’s January 2025 technical blog describes this kind of indirect prompt injection as agent hijacking.

Keep separate users’ and sessions’ memory isolated. Review sensitive information before it is persisted, set expiration limits, and redact credentials before writing logs or telemetry. Use an ephemeral context for credential operations where appropriate, rather than allowing a live secret to linger in a general-purpose conversation or memory store. Do not put live credentials or customer data in security-test fixtures.

Two-factor authentication does not make it safe to hand an agent a one-time code or recovery code in a prompt. Authentication factors are credentials too: use an authorized integration or trusted authentication flow, and keep the agent from being the general repository for passwords, tokens, or codes.

Where should authorization and approval happen?

Do not treat model-generated text as the authorization decision. Enforce tool policies deterministically outside the model, validate tool arguments, and avoid broad wildcard permissions. The trusted execution boundary should decide whether the requested operation is allowed, rather than accepting a model’s statement that the user approved it.

Separate planning from execution for irreversible or high-impact operations. Require independent approval or validation before an action such as initiating a transfer, changing a financial-account setting, or disclosing sensitive data. Approval should be bound to the actual operation being executed; a general instruction in a conversation should not silently grant open-ended authority.

How should teams test and operate these controls?

Test whether an agent can be induced to reveal a secret, use an unauthorized tool, escalate its privileges, act on poisoned memory, bypass an approval, or exfiltrate data. Include recursive tool use and multi-agent handoffs where the design supports them. OWASP’s agent guidance calls for adversarial testing; NIST recommends task-specific evaluation and trying multiple attempts.

  1. Define the expected boundary. Record which identity, tools, resources, actions, and session limits the agent should have for a given task.
  2. Run repeatable abuse cases. Test prompt override, malicious retrieved content, unauthorized tool calls, privilege escalation, memory poisoning, approval bypass, secret disclosure, and multi-agent chaining as applicable.
  3. Record observed decisions. Preserve the tested configuration, versions, tool policies, retrieval setup, abuse cases, and whether each attempt was allowed or denied.
  4. Use regression checks. Keep expected-denial cases in the test suite, and do not approve changes to high-risk scopes or approval logic without evidence that the relevant checks still work.
  5. Respond to suspected exposure. Revoke or rotate the affected credential, review attributable access records, and correct the path that allowed exposure before restoring the agent’s access.

Repeat testing when the agent’s tools, prompts, retrieval setup, memory behavior, or authorization logic changes. A passing test describes the configuration and behavior tested; it does not establish that every deployment using the same model, framework, vault, or connector is secure.

What is established—and what still depends on the deployment?

OWASP’s MCP Top 10 is a living document; its token-exposure item is labeled MCP01:2025. OWASP’s agent-security and secrets-management cheat sheets are current web guidance checked on October 3, 2026. NIST’s hijacking-evaluation article is dated January 2025, and its agent-identity article was published in 2026.

These sources provide architecture-level guidance, not evidence that a particular vault, model, connector, cloud configuration, agent framework, or deployment has been tested or is secure. Apply the controls to the actual trust boundaries, identity provider, tool execution path, data sensitivity, and operating environment involved.
