It expands Amazon’s access to Synopsys silicon intellectual property (IP) and engineering tools, while Synopsys plans to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services—including Amazon Bedrock—to develop its own IP, software and AI agents. The announcement does not disclose a specific chip design, production schedule, payment timetable or royalty rate.
What the Amazon–Synopsys agreement covers
Synopsys describes Amazon as the lead customer for its expanded application-optimized silicon IP business. The companies also plan broader work involving electronic design automation (EDA), simulation, analysis, agentic AI and multiphysics modeling for Amazon’s Trainium and Graviton silicon. The announcement does not assign the agreement to a particular chip design or say when any resulting design will enter production.
The companies say they have collaborated for more than 15 years. Synopsys characterizes the new agreement as a next phase of that relationship and says it is evolving its silicon IP business toward a license-plus-royalty model intended to deliver value as production volumes grow.
Two distinct sides of the deal
| Workstream | What the announcement says |
|---|---|
| Synopsys IP and engineering for Amazon | Expanded access to application-optimized silicon IP, alongside EDA, simulation, analysis, agentic AI and planned multiphysics work related to Trainium and Graviton. |
| AWS services for Synopsys | Synopsys plans to use Amazon EC2, AWS cloud storage and Amazon Bedrock to accelerate development of its IP and EDA tools, including building and deploying AI applications and agents. |
These are related parts of the commercial relationship, but they should not be conflated: the release describes Synopsys using Bedrock and other AWS services to develop Synopsys products and agents. It does not say Amazon is using Bedrock to design its chips.

Which Amazon chips are named?
- Nitro: Amazon’s silicon family for cloud security, networking and storage.
- Graviton: Amazon’s general-purpose computing processor family.
- Trainium: Amazon’s AI chips for training and inference.
The announcement names these families as part of the broader silicon relationship, but it does not identify a specific chip design, product launch or manufacturing schedule. It also does not report production volumes or measured performance gains attributable to this agreement.
What does “more than $1 billion” mean?
The figure is the announced value of a multi-year agreement, not a disclosed per-chip price or proof that $1 billion has already been paid or recognized as revenue. Synopsys and Amazon did not publish the payment schedule, royalty rate, guaranteed production volumes, detailed contract terms or how the value is allocated between them. Synopsys says the license-plus-royalty approach is intended to link value to production growth; the release does not quantify that future economics.

What the companies say—and what is still prospective
Amazon executive Peter DeSantis said purpose-built chips “deliver better performance at lower cost” because they are designed for customer needs. That is the company’s stated rationale for custom silicon, not an independently reported benchmark comparing chips under specified conditions. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi described special-purpose silicon as central to AWS innovation and called Amazon the lead customer for the company’s next phase of application-optimized IP growth.
The release presents expected benefits and planned technical work, not realized productivity gains, deployed AI workflows, production results or independently measured outcomes. Synopsys’ announcement also cautions that forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties. Read Synopsys’ September 30, 2026 announcement for the companies’ full description.
