Celestica opened its second manufacturing plant in Suzhou, China, on November 13, 2003. The new facility, located in the Singapore-Suzhou Industrial Park, was the company’s second plant in the Suzhou region within three years. At the time, Celestica said its Suzhou operations supported more than 1,600 employees and represented more than $140 million in cumulative investment.

What happened in Suzhou in 2003?

Celestica opened a new manufacturing facility on November 13, 2003, in the Singapore-Suzhou Industrial Park. EDN’s report described it as the company’s second plant built in the Suzhou region in the previous three years. Celestica’s corporate history also records the opening of a new Suzhou manufacturing facility in 2003.

The opening expanded Celestica’s manufacturing presence in China. It did not mark the start of the company’s Suzhou operations: the reference to a second plant indicates an earlier regional facility, but the available event reporting does not give a like-for-like opening date or operating figures for that first plant.

How large was the operation?

According to Celestica, as reported by EDN in 2003, more than 1,600 employees supported the new facility. Celestica also said its total investment in Suzhou exceeded $140 million after the opening. The investment figure describes the cumulative Suzhou total, not a disclosed construction cost for the new plant alone.

What manufacturing work did the plant support?

The opening report said the facility gave original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers options across a broad range of production profiles: high-volume, low-mix manufacturing and low-volume, high-mix manufacturing. That flexibility let customers use the site for differing combinations of production scale and product variety.

Celestica vice president of China Operations Cliff Chu said the facility expanded the company’s presence in China and added capability to the region. He also pointed to the proximity of Celestica facilities in Suzhou, Shanghai and Dongguan as a potential source of customer benefits and operational efficiencies.

How does the current Suzhou operation differ from the 2003 opening?

Celestica’s current location profile describes its Suzhou operation as a Center of Excellence supporting communications and healthcare. The listed capabilities extend beyond manufacturing to design, new-product introduction, supply-chain management, fulfillment and after-market services. The profile also lists a 1K clean room and failure-analysis, optical and metrology laboratories.

The company lists the current location at No. 448 Su Hong Middle Road, Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China 215021. These present-day details describe the operation as Celestica profiles it now; they should not be treated as a complete inventory of what was available at the plant when it opened in 2003.

What was the 2017 Suzhou opening?

A separate facility called Celestica GBS Suzhou opened on March 22, 2017, with more than 300 employees, according to the Suzhou Industrial Park administration. That later global-business-services center is distinct from the manufacturing plant opened in 2003; the administration described the manufacturing plant as established in 2003.
