AMD announced plans in August 2024 to establish two R&D sites in southern Taiwan: one in Tainan and one in Kaohsiung. The company said the work would be carried out with Taiwanese universities and industry partners. Official information published later says the offices began operating in 2025, but public announcements do not specify their exact addresses, staffing levels or budgets.
Where are AMD’s two Taiwan R&D centers?
The announced sites are in Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, both in southern Taiwan. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) reported on August 21, 2024, that AMD had indicated it would establish R&D locations in both cities and cooperate with Taiwanese universities and companies. MOEA’s announcement attributes the plan to AMD during a meeting with the economics minister.
Tainan’s government confirmed its city’s site the next day. Its Economic Development Bureau said MOEA had confirmed AMD would establish an R&D location in Tainan and work with local universities and companies. Tainan City Government’s release confirms that location; the two releases do not identify facility addresses.
What will AMD research there?
The 2024 announcements describe an expansion of research capacity through cooperation with Taiwan’s universities and industry, but do not set out a detailed research program for each city. An official Invest Taiwan presentation published in 2025 says the Tainan and Kaohsiung R&D offices began operations that year and identifies AI hardware and software and silicon photonics among their focus areas. Did AMD already open the offices?
The August 2024 statements announced the plan, not a completed opening. The 2025 Invest Taiwan presentation says operations began at R&D offices in both cities that year. The cited public material does not provide a specific opening date or further operational details for either site.

How does the 2026 Taiwan investment announcement relate?
On May 21, 2026, AMD announced more than $10 billion in investments across Taiwan’s broader technology ecosystem, focused on AI infrastructure and advanced-packaging manufacturing.
