How to Check Whether Your Rivian R2 Is Affected by a Safety Recall

Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to check your Rivian R2’s 17-character VIN, understand what a zero-result means, and find out what to do if an unrepaired recall appears.

To check a specific Rivian R2, enter its 17-character VIN in NHTSA’s official recall lookup. A result of “0 unrepaired recalls” means none is currently associated with that VIN in the lookup; it does not show recalls that have already been repaired or guarantee that a newly announced recall has been fully matched to affected vehicles.

How to check your R2’s recall status

  1. Find the VIN. It is visible at the lower left of the windshield and may also appear on the vehicle registration or insurance card. The VIN is 17 characters.
  2. Open NHTSA’s lookup. Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter the VIN. NHTSA also offers a license-plate search, but use the VIN for the most direct check of your particular vehicle.
  3. Review the result. If an unrepaired recall is listed, read its details and any interim safety instructions. Contact Rivian about the remedy and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. The available information does not establish a particular R2 repair procedure.
  4. Check again when appropriate. If a recall is newly announced, or you have reason to question a result, repeat the VIN lookup later. NHTSA says affected VINs may be identified and added over time. Its free SaferCar app can send alerts for a vehicle you enter.

What the lookup result does—and does not—tell you

A VIN result is specific to one vehicle

A search by make, model, and year gives general recall information, not a determination for your R2. A VIN lookup is the relevant check for whether NHTSA’s system currently associates an unrepaired recall with that vehicle.

“No unrepaired recalls” does not mean “never recalled”

NHTSA’s VIN results omit recalls that have already been repaired. The result is a current view of unrepaired recalls recorded for that VIN, not a complete history of every recall action involving the vehicle.

New recall information can take time to appear

NHTSA notes that some recently announced recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified and entered. The agency also states that its lookup provides manufacturer recall information that may not yet be posted on NHTSA’s site. If the lookup conflicts with a notice from Rivian, contact Rivian for clarification.

There are limits to the records shown

The lookup excludes safety recalls more than 15 years old, subject to manufacturer coverage exceptions. It also excludes non-safety campaigns and international recalls. NHTSA says recalls do not expire, so contact Rivian if you need clarification about a recall notice or remedy.

When to use a license plate instead

NHTSA’s page also supports license-plate searches, using state DMV data. If the plate search shows a vehicle you previously owned or otherwise appears incorrect, use the VIN instead; DMV records may be stale or inaccurate.

What is known about R2 recalls

Rivian says R2 deliveries have begun. Its May 27, 2026 announcement said order invitations, demo drives, and initial customer deliveries would begin June 9, 2026. Those milestones establish that R2s are reaching customers, but they do not determine whether any individual R2 has an open recall. Check the vehicle’s VIN rather than assuming the model is recall-free.
