Silicon Labs bought Redpine Signals’ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth business, its Hyderabad development center and a patent portfolio in a 2020 asset deal. It announced a $308 million cash price; a later company filing reported approximately $317 million after closing adjustments. Contemporaneous trade reporting also said the acquired operations included Redpine’s MCU business and real-time location services.

What did Silicon Labs acquire?

Silicon Labs announced the definitive asset purchase agreement on March 12, 2020; the agreement had been entered into the day before. The deal covered Redpine Signals’ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth business, its Hyderabad, India development center and an extensive patent portfolio. It was an acquisition of those operations and assets, not a purchase of the entire Redpine corporate entity. Silicon Labs’ announcement and its completion release describe that scope.

Silicon Labs completed the transaction on April 28, 2020. Its completion release said the Hyderabad center had approximately 200 employees, adding engineering capacity alongside the acquired technology.

Where do the MCU and location services fit?

Silicon Labs’ releases emphasized Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the patent portfolio and Hyderabad center. Contemporaneous EE Times coverage reported that Redpine’s microcontroller (MCU) business and real-time location services technology were included as well. Those additional elements are supported by the trade report; they are not specified in the same way in Silicon Labs’ deal descriptions.

How much did Silicon Labs pay?

At announcement, Silicon Labs stated a $308 million cash consideration, subject to customary working-capital and other adjustments. After the deal closed, its 2020 quarterly filing reported approximately $317 million in cash after closing adjustments. These figures describe different stages of the transaction, not necessarily a contradiction: the first was the announced consideration, while the later disclosure reflected adjustments. Why was the deal important to Silicon Labs?

Low-power Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi 6 roadmap

The central strategic rationale was Redpine’s low-power Wi-Fi technology and intellectual property. Silicon Labs said these assets would help accelerate its Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) silicon, software and solutions roadmap for connected devices. The emphasis was on connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT), rather than a general-purpose consumer networking acquisition.

Bluetooth for audio and wearables

The acquired capabilities also included Bluetooth Classic intellectual property, including Extended Data Rate. Silicon Labs pointed to audio-oriented applications such as wearables, hearables, voice assistants and smart speakers as potential uses.

Engineering talent and distribution reach

The Hyderabad team gave Silicon Labs a multidisciplinary engineering center in a region it described as rich in engineering talent. The company also said it planned to bring Redpine products into its worldwide sales and distribution network. These were announced strategic aims, not proof of later financial or product outcomes.

What financial contribution did Silicon Labs expect?

In its March 2020 announcement, Silicon Labs projected approximately $20 million in annualized fiscal 2020 revenue from the acquired business. It also expected the acquisition to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings per share in the second half of 2021. Those were management forecasts at announcement time; they should not be read as reported results or as confirmation that the expected contribution occurred.

What the deal does—and does not—establish

The transaction record establishes the assets Silicon Labs said it acquired, its announced and adjusted cash figures, and the strategic rationale it offered at the time. It does not, by itself, establish measured long-term synergies, current product branding or present-day availability of products tied to the acquired technology. The MCU and real-time location components should be attributed to contemporaneous trade coverage rather than presented as details emphasized in Silicon Labs’ own releases.
