Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo buy physical gold or silver, compare each seller’s written price with the current spot value of the item’s fine-metal weight, then compare its buyback quote and all fees. Buy from a seller you have researched, verify product claims against specifications, and decide how you will store the metal before paying. Spot is a benchmark—not the price you will pay or necessarily receive when you sell.
Start with the metal value, not the sticker price
Spot price is the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. The CFTC and FINRA’s 2024 investor advisory describe it as the baseline for comparing physical metal. Use the item’s fine-metal weight—the amount of gold or silver it actually contains—rather than assuming every coin or bar weighs exactly one troy ounce of pure metal.
A dealer generally sells above spot and may buy back below it. The gap between the dealer’s sell and buy prices is the spread; the amount above metal value is a premium. Fees, shipping, storage and insurance add to the cost. Spot therefore has to rise enough to cover your costs before a sale breaks even. A dealer’s buyback quote is not a promise of profit.
There is no single reliable premium or spread for all retail gold and silver purchases. Quotes change with the market, product, seller and transaction terms. Compare live offers at the same time rather than relying on a claimed “usual” premium.

Compare complete quotes from sellers
Ask each seller for the same product and terms: metal, product type, fine-metal weight, payment method and delivery conditions. Record the quote time, because spot and retail prices can move. Ask for the retail price, commissions, fees, shipping or other charges, and the price the dealer would pay to buy the item back. Get the agreed terms in writing before paying.
| Comparison item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Metal-value baseline | Current spot price at the quote time multiplied by the item’s fine-metal weight |
| Retail quote | Agreed item price, plus commissions, fees, shipping and other charges |
| Resale quote | What the same seller says it would pay to buy the item back; ask what conditions apply |
| Ongoing costs | Storage, insurance and administrative charges, if applicable |
| Transaction terms | Payment method, delivery timing and cost, and return terms |
Comparing the retail price with the metal-value baseline shows the initial premium; comparing the retail and buyback quotes helps show the spread. A low advertised price is not necessarily the cheapest transaction if its fees or resale terms are worse.

Choose bullion deliberately; treat collectibles differently
Bullion is valued principally by its precious-metal weight. A collectible or numismatic coin may also be priced for rarity, condition, age or limited mintage. Those qualities may matter to collectors, but do not assume a collectible premium will be recovered when you sell.
Be clear about which kind of product you are buying and why. If your goal is exposure to the metal itself, compare fine-metal weight and price rather than relying on a seller’s claims about rarity or future appreciation. The available guidance does not establish a universally best choice between gold and silver, or between coins and bars.

Find and screen a seller
The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to consumers. Its bullion distribution network includes Authorized Purchasers, who supply wholesalers and retail dealers. The Mint’s Authorized Purchasers page identifies distributors; listing there is not a government endorsement or a guarantee that a firm sells directly to individual buyers. The Mint says its bullion prices are based on prevailing metal prices plus a premium, and that prices change with the metals markets. Its published bulk-purchase terms and premiums are not individual retail quotes.
The Mint recommends researching dealers and reviewing its current Authorized Purchasers list. Also check complaint history with consumer organizations or state authorities. The CFTC and FINRA caution that retail precious-metal dealers are not federally regulated, so do not treat a listing or sales pitch as a substitute for your own checks.

- Do not rush in response to a cold call, unsolicited email, junk mail, social-media promotion or infomercial.
- Ask directly what the seller would pay if you sold the metal back the next day.
- Request the full retail price, commissions and fees in writing before committing.
- Be especially cautious about a price materially below current market value; verify the item, seller and terms rather than treating a bargain claim as proof.
Check authenticity claims against the product
For a U.S. Mint bullion coin, compare its weight, diameter and key features with the Mint’s published specifications. The Mint’s consumer-awareness guidance also recommends asking whether a third party certifies the coin or the seller guarantees its weight and precious-metal content.
Genuine U.S. Mint bullion coins have government-guaranteed weight, content and purity. That guarantee describes genuine Mint issues; it does not establish that a particular coin offered for sale is genuine. Packaging, a certificate, appearance or one informal home test should not be treated as conclusive authentication across all bullion products. The official guidance does not establish a universal at-home test.

Storage is both a cost and an access decision. The Mint’s coin-care guidance recommends appropriate holders, cool and dry conditions, retaining documentation and careful handling to avoid damage. It lists a bank safe-deposit box as one option, but does not provide a comparative security ranking of home and bank storage. For a home collection, check whether your insurance covers its full replacement cost.
If a dealer or vault offers storage, get clear answers before transferring money or metal:
- Is specific metal allocated to you, or do you hold only an account balance?
- Where is it held, and who has legal title?
- What storage, insurance and administrative charges apply, and how can they change?
- Can you inspect, withdraw or arrange delivery? What are the procedures, timing and costs?
The CFTC and FINRA identify storage and insurance as potential costs and warn that fraudulent sellers have charged customers for metal that did not exist. Treat a storage arrangement as a service to verify, not as proof the metal is held for you.
Account for taxes and retirement-account complications
State sales and use tax treatment is not established here; check the rules in your jurisdiction or consult a qualified tax professional. If you are considering buying metals through a self-directed IRA, pause to understand the separate rules and costs. The CFTC and FINRA warn that storage, insurance, administrative charges, taxes and penalties may apply and that retirement-account rules are complex. This is not individualized tax or retirement advice.
