To check whether a gold or silver quote is live, look for an explicit feed-status label, the instrument or benchmark being quoted, and a timestamp with its timezone. Then compare it with a source that states its own data status. A timestamp shows when a page says it updated; by itself, it does not prove the price is real time.
Check the quote label and timestamp
Start beside the number or in the chart’s data notes. Look for terms such as “real time,” “delayed,” a stated delay in minutes, “settlement,” or the name of a benchmark. Find the “last updated” time too, and note its timezone. If the page does not say whether the feed is real time or delayed, treat its freshness as unverified.
- Feed status: An explicit delay notice is more useful than how often the display appears to change.
- Timestamp: It tells you when the page reports an update, but does not independently confirm when the underlying data was generated.
- Timezone: A time without a timezone can be difficult to compare with a market’s published schedule.
For example, CME Group labels the market data on its Gold Futures Overview as delayed by at least 10 minutes. CME says its delayed data is published 10 minutes after the values are first disseminated on its real-time feed in its settlement-data FAQ. Those statements apply to CME’s data, not every precious-metals quote online.
Identify what kind of price you are viewing
Two pages can show different numbers without either being stale if they quote different instruments or price types. Before comparing, identify whether the figure is a spot quote, a particular futures contract, a benchmark auction price, or a settlement value.

Spot and futures quotes
A continuously quoted spot value and a futures contract are not interchangeable. A futures quote refers to a contract with a delivery month; check which contract the page displays before comparing it with another source.
LBMA auction benchmarks
The LBMA Gold and Silver Prices are scheduled benchmark prices, not continuously updating spot quotes. The LBMA Precious Metal Prices page gives the gold auction times as 10:30 and 15:00 London time, and the silver auction time as noon London time. The LBMA Silver Price FAQ says the silver auction takes place at noon UK time each working day.

LBMA says its public website publishes daily auction prices with a delay until midnight London time on the day they are set. Faster access to these benchmarks is described through ICE Benchmark Administration and market-data redistributors, subject to applicable access and licensing arrangements. ICE Benchmark Administration says intraday data for the LBMA Gold and Silver benchmarks is available four hours after original publication, with delayed data available at midnight London time; see its About page and LBMA’s About LBMA Daily Auction Prices.
Settlement values
A settlement price is a reference value published on its own schedule, not necessarily a live quote. CME’s settlement-data FAQ describes different delivery timings depending on dataset and product tier: midnight, 10 minutes after publication on MDP, or two hours after publication. Check the relevant dataset and tier rather than assuming “CME data” has one universal delay.

Compare like with like
Before deciding that a quote is delayed, make sure both sources refer to the same price type and comparable terms. LBMA describes its gold and silver benchmark prices in US dollars per troy ounce. A displayed price in another currency, or a different unit, can differ for reasons unrelated to feed delay.
- Match the instrument: spot with spot, or the same futures contract and delivery month.
- Match the price type: do not compare a scheduled benchmark or settlement value with a continuously quoted market price as if they were identical.
- Match units and currency, including whether the figure is per troy ounce.
- Compare timestamps in the same timezone and account for the relevant update, auction, or settlement schedule.
Calendar matters as well. LBMA says its Precious Metal Prices are not published on weekends or UK bank holidays. A benchmark display that has not changed on one of those days may reflect the publication calendar rather than a failed feed.

A practical verification sequence
- Read the status notice. Find an explicit “real time” or “delayed” label, a delay length, or a note that the figure is a settlement or benchmark.
- Record the timestamp and timezone. Treat “last updated” as a clue about the page, not proof of live market data.
- Identify the quote. Determine whether it is spot, a futures contract and delivery month, an LBMA auction benchmark, or a settlement figure.
- Check the relevant schedule and calendar. For an LBMA benchmark, account for its auction time and non-publication days; for settlement data, check the applicable dataset and delivery tier.
- Cross-check against a source that states its data status. CME’s public gold page, for example, labels its data as delayed by at least 10 minutes. For faster LBMA benchmark access, consult the access information from ICE Benchmark Administration or an authorized redistributor.
- Mark it unverified if the status is missing. A current-looking number, frequent screen changes, or a recognizable brand is not enough to establish that a feed is live.
How to interpret what you find
Use the evidence in this order: an explicit feed-status statement, the identity of the instrument or benchmark, and the timestamp in context. A displayed time can help you assess whether a page is refreshing, but it cannot settle the live-versus-delayed question without a statement about the feed. If two quotes disagree, first rule out differences in instrument, benchmark schedule, currency, unit, or settlement timing before attributing the gap to delay.
